Maybe all those jumping to Nikon mirrorless will want to sell their current equipment cheap!! I'm all for that :)

With a $3K, or $4K camera, and all new lenses to pay for, I doubt if their prices will be in the "cheap" range.

New mount means new lenses again. No thanks. Nikon doesn’t listen to it consumers that’s why it’s in the position it’s in now.

Nikon is in better shape than they have been in years. They are doing the job they are supposed to be doing, making money!

I'll stick to the $1100.00 X-T2, and use the 2-3K extra for good glass... Not worried about "keeping up with the Joneses".

I think we can all agree that that's a ridiculous statement in every way.

Many, many current Canon/Nikon/Pentax users are wed to the OVF, and won't go MILC. The real effect on DSLR sales will be seen amongst new users.

I don't know about that. Most professionals who started using mirrorless cameras did so, based on experiences and examples of respected professionals who had switched before we did.

Mirrorless gear isn't for everyone, but neither are dSLRs. There is room in the marketplace, and there are viable uses for, both systems. The real question is, is that economically sustainable for the manufacturers?

A generation from now, the landscape will look entirely different, if the past is any indication! I remember PMAI's 1990s conventions. 40,000 to 50,000 photo industry people converged on Las Vegas or New Orleans. Now, PMAI is effectively gone, merged with CES, and reincarnated in some form none of us old timers care for. (PMAI was the Photo Marketing Association International, a trade association of dealers, manufacturers, brokers, labs, and splinter groups of digital imaging pros, school photographers, framers, and sports photographers.)

There's actually nothing new in this announcement other than confirmation that Nikon is going to develop yet another series of lenses which are incompatible with their earlier cameras.

We basically already knew they were developing a FF MILC.... they'd already said that. We just didn't know when it would be available (and still don't). We also didn't know what features it will have... or not have (and still don't).

It's the same with Canon, who've also said they have a FF MILC in development (and rumored to have some prototypes being field-tested).

The difference is that Canon's APS-C MILC have started to sell reasonably well and compete with some success in the marketplace, after finally being brought up to minimal consumer expectations (there's still plenty of room for further improvement... most especially a serious need to expand the selection of lenses available for them!)

In contrast, Nikon has had to discontinue their 1" sensor based MILC system. So Nikon is pretty much mirorless-less right now. But some day in the future, they'll have a FF MILC! Whoopee!

I am HOPING Canon won't make the same mistake of introducing yet another line of lenses and offering adapters to allow existing EF lenses to be used on their FF MILC. One thing we can learn from Sony is that with FF MILS there's little to be gained in size/weight savings, especially among the lenses.... especially not with adapted lenses (which IMO just make a lightened MILC camera feel unbalanced). Canon introduced their M-series APS-C mirrorless cameras in mid-2012... but in six years time have only developed a total of seven lenses for them (two primes, five zooms)... and there's rumor of one more coming soon. If they are similarly slow to develop yet another series of lenses specifically for their FF MILC, it will be a failure in the marketplace... The fastest, easiest and far more sensible approach would be to make the Canon FF MILC compatible with the 45 or so existing EF lenses. No adapters (which just add size and weight). Maybe there's a way to make a camera that can instead be modified to use special lenses developed for it in the future (if needed at all).

Not any meat in that announcement, only that it is coming. What MP, frames per second, etc. Don't get me wrong, I shoot with Nikon gear and have for many years, but this is a typical "Tease" press release that all the camera makers use.

I've been wondering about the D850 shortages. Why can't Nikon make enough of them? Is the D850 out-selling the D3xxx and D5xxx series? I doubt it. While people wait for the D850 to be manufactured, they see other brands that are worth their consideration.

Here is a thought about the back order of 850, hum is that because they have been running the factory production for the mirrorless models.
A side notes the x mount is also the right diameter for medium format. Hum food for thought.
Some clever engineers measured the diameter of the lens mount from the video and compared against the Fuji medium format.
I think they have something in mind to future proof the camera with the x mount.
Take this with a few grains of salt.
From an engineering stand point they said more in the videos than meets the eye.
They are starting with 2 models and I think they are going to price one to compete with the Sony 7 mark 2 somewhere in the 1900.00 us dollar range.
Anyone want to bet on this.

Cheers ron

I think they will call it the Z mount and not the X mount.

Interesting that Nikon is going straight for the full frame market, bypassing, at least for the time being, mirrorless APS-C. Perhaps they're just going to cede APS mirrorless to Canon, Fuji & Sony. That might be smart.

What I hope is that Nikon's new z-mount (or whatever) lenses will really sparkle and shine for the full-frame system -- the way Olympus/Panasonic lenses do for MFT. Not like Canon with the "just OK" lenses for the M series. It took Sony quite a while to come up with really sterling lenses for their mirrorless full-frame; and, my gosh, what prices they have!

I think it's smart to go straight for full frame and not even make any APS-C. APS-C has caused a lot of confusion for many people about the crop factor. Also I don't think Sony is doing as well in the A6xxx series as compared to the A7 series. To make it simple any Z mount lenses will work on any Z cameras.
