Did anybody mention 2 of my favorite National Parks- Theodore Roosevelt and Badlands? If you make it to the badlands, try and make it to Wall Drugstore. Loads of fun, free ice water, and 5 cent coffee!

If you have two more days, you might want to go north to the Custer Battlefield. Look at your map and and work it into your loop, if possible. Overcast days are best, it sets a mood.

If you have any interest in the plains native Americans history the Vore Buffalo jump archaeology site is like eight miles into WY. Exit 205, that is one mile into WY. I spent two hours there with my brother who came out from WI last week.
As you see plenty of things to see and do.
Rapid City also known for its down town sculptures of US presidents. Down town business have walking around maps to help with identifying them all.

My wife and I are headed out there the second weekend in September. Staying in Keystone.
This will be our third trip out there.
I will be taking my Nikon P900 and Nikon S9500. I'll also have a tripod and camera bag
with extra batteries and memory cards.

I can't recommend any one place over another. We like it all. Don't forget Custer State Park.
Plenty of wildlife and sights to see and photograph there.

Have a fun and safe trip.

Others have recommended great places in S.D. If possible, stop in the town of Wall. The Wall Drug Store is far more than a drug store. Everything from a café to you name it. You won't want to miss it. Quite a history!

to all the kind folks that has provided a wealth of information. THANK YOU.

Mizzee - We'll be driving so taking all my equipment is not a big deal.
DK - Thanks for the update on the fire. Mother nature is remarkable at putting things back together, and usually better then before.
Unclehoss - Journey to the geographic center of the U.S. we go. Have to read up on this.

To All Thanks
Steve

We are planning a trip from St. Louis, MO - Kansas city, KS - Omaha, NE - Sioux City, SD and finally Rapid City, SD around mid Sept.
Besides the obvious Mt. Rushmore, Crazy horse and badlands (Not sure what areas in the badlands to go). Any other recommended areas for photo ops in SD.

Camera Equip. Includes Oly bridge, D7100, 24mm f/2.8, 70-300mm f/4-5.6, 105mm macro f/2.8and a 170-500mm. Thinking of buying a 10-24mm because of the crop sensor. Have a sling pack and med backpack to carry equipment. Thoughts on taking more or less equipment.

Thanks in advance for all your support. I'll check back after 6pm gotta go to work.

Steve
We are planning a trip from St. Louis, MO - Kansas... (show quote)

We just returned from the Black Hills last week. We skipped Spearfish Canyon due to a Corvette Rally and didn't want to spend time stalled in traffic. Saw everything else mentioned. We saw Buffalo, Donkeys, Pronghorn Antelope, Mountain Goats, Bighorn Sheep and Prairie Dogs. When in Custer State Park stop at the wildlife station and ask where the buffalo herd is. Be sure to drive the Iron Mountain Hwy to see Mount Rushmore framed by tunnels. At Bear Country south of Rapid City you can drive through a preserve with Bears, Elk and many more wild animals.

I was stationed at Ellsworth Air Plane Patch back in the early 70's. They have B1's now. It is 10 miles east of Rapid City. If you like airplanes there might be some opportunities flying by.

Be a shame not to get to Yellowstone since you are so close. I have always stayed in Gardner which is right at the north entrance. Ask someone where the old Yellowstone trail is (goes north out of Gardner). It's worth spending a day on it.

Custer State Park. Stay in the cabins if available. Lots of Bison. Take a guided tour if available (take your camera - hand held). Do Mt. Rushmore at night with a tripod. Needles highway.

Friday September 28th is Custer State Park’s annual Buffalo Roundup. A must do/see! 800-1000 moms and young are driven between two hills into corrals for health checks, herd size regulation. Spectators on each hill. South hill has a photographer area, permit required. Have not investigated how to obtain one.
