Just returned from river cruise Budapest to Prague. My advice as others is to travel light. I carried my Canon 5d Mark iii and a 24-105 lens. It got very heavy by the end of the trip. We walked between 3-8 miles a day. I saw enough churches for a lifetime. If I every do something like this again I will have a mirrorless camera which is less than half of the weight. I also found that the tours with the cruise line did not allow enough time for me to explore and photograph the way I like to. Just shoot a lot and edit when you get home. Have a great time.

We did that trip on Viking the other direction several years ago and I only carried my D300 with an 18-200 lens along with a point-and-shoot (forgotten which one). I never felt limited by the lens selection.

There will be many many photo ops, but my favorite from the same trip was of Parliament at Budapest at night, taken as we motored past. It was a special outing for us to see the city at night. I assume Viking will have such an evening trip. I mention this event because it helps to be ready for it. The building is spectacular with its lighting.

Heading out to a 2 week Viking river cruise next week. Amsterdam to Budapest. Canon 70D with several lenses. Any suugestions on which lenses to take and special places for photos?

Travel RIGHT, travel LITE. I have been on that river cruise and the only camera I took was my pocket Sony HX90V with pop up view finder and Zeiss 24-750 mm zoom. You will be on the move a lot, do not burden yourself, you will not enjoy the cruise. I have a belt pouch for my camera and my hands are free to hold my wife's hand and take a shot when needed.

We loved the trip enjoy. I traveled with a nikon 7200, and 750 I used a Tamron 18-270 nikon 24-70 and a Nikon 50 1.8.i picked a camera and lens to carry and put the 50 in my pocket for low light situations I do not remember any regrets that I wish I had the other camera or lens. I felt very safe leaving my laptop and other camera equipment on the ship.

Have fun
Joe

What I always say when someone is take what might be a once in a lifetime trip, always take your widest lens and your longest reach lens.

Better yet, if you can, take all your lens for the camera you are taking. After all, you did buy each one for a reason(s), didn't you??

Have a GREAT trip! I envy you.

With my 70D i liked the 28/135 lens then went to the Tamron 16/300.

Travel light is best advice. On one trip my wife was asked if she worked for CNN as she was carrying so much gear.

Have a wonderful trip and make a lot of memories.

So, it's OK with you if a guy/gal takes 10 lenses and 4 bodies with them cause it's a lifetime trip. REALLY?

I have done several river cruises including the one you are on. Your 18-200 mm lens is all you need, especially for shots from the boat in the Rhine Gorge and elsewhere, but not ideal. Why? Because you will spend lots of time indoors in palaces and churches and museums where a fast lens is preferred. Which you do not have.

My DSLR kit for such a trip with a Canon 80D is a Sigma 17-50 mm f/2.8 lens for walkaround and indoors and a Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS fo shots from the boat. I also use a Kenko 1.4x extender on both when useful, as it is small to carry and I lose only one stop. There is no need for a tripod or monopod and the boat moves and when touring with the group so will you.

Another option is a good smaller bridge camera with a fast lens and reasonable reach for walkaround and indoors. I have used a Fujifilm X30 (no longer available) which has a 2.0 lens and a 28-112mm range for walkaround when carrying a heavy camera is not convenient with excellent results. Sony and Panasonic and Canon have similar cameras available. I hope this helps.

My wife and I are considering the Viking Grand European tour for next year. Can an one speak to the cruse itself?
Food, Side trips, Folks, etc..... I usually don't do cruses as I prefer wandering and exploring but we're getting older.
My wife hears good things about Viking......any experienced travelers here?

Opinions welcome and appreciated.

FWIW always travel light

This is the best advice on this post. You will regret hauling anything else with you.

I did that trip with the same camera a couple years ago. 18-135mm stayed on my camera 95% of the time. The only other lens you might want would be a wider angle than 18mm. However, it's up to you. The more i travel, the less equipment I need or use. 18-135mm is a great all-around lens for travel photography. If you were going to Africa to shoot wildlife, I would have a different answer.

Did it last year. Great trip. Posted many photos on uhh you can search for. We took as many optional excursions as possible, and found them worth while. And, it fills the days nicely and affords the opportunity for many great photos.

Take the 10-18mm in addition to the 18-200mm. It is light and as one poster stated, European cities are compact. Leave the rest home.
