The 10-20 Nikon is a great lens. Combined with the 18-400 Tamron you’ve got it all covered. You should not underestimate the quality of the 18-400, it is amazing and I have very high standards.

Can you do everything you need to do with the D5100? If so, get better glass first. If you are missing shots because of a missing capability, then get the body that provides that capability at the most cost effective price and starting saving for better glass.

I think I would go with the D7200, I have one and it is a great camera. With that being said, if budget permits, move up to the D500. Don't over look a refurbished model, will save you a few $$$. The turn off for me on the D7500 is only one memory card slot, Nikon dropped the ball on this one IMHO.

Just looking at what you shoot. It seems to me you should be plotting a path to full frame rather than crop sensor. Refurb or new D610 or D750. You could go for a wide-area zoom or a prime or 2.

I presently have a D5100 W/ Nikkor 18-55, 55-300, and 35mm lenses and a Sigma 105mm macro lenses and SB 400 and 600 Speedlites. I'm thinking of getting either a D7200 body or a Tamron 18-400 lens. Which way to go first? I photograph mostly scenery and flowers.

I'd suggest getting the Tamron and selling the two Nikkor kit lenses. With the proceeds you'd be about half way to buying a Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 to cover ultra wide, which will give you considerable extra functionality for your landscapes. Since you already have a good macro lens, you'd be all set.

if more MP was important for better photographs the pro cameras would have sensors with more MPs.

Always upgrade glass first. Lenses are a long term investment. Camera bodies wear out, get damaged, get upgraded. My second DSLR was a D70s - 2006 - and lenses that I bought (FX) to use with it are still being used with my D810. I have had 3 other bodies along the way to the D810, but the lenses have remained. For your next purchase, consider a macro lens to get up close and personal with the flowers.

I have had a D7200 for about 2 years now (stepping up from a D7000 and a D5100) and the one thing I've noticed very quickly is that this body (and sensor) needs excellent glass. I can almost guarantee that you would not be very happy with the performance of either your 18-55 or the 18-400 from Tamron. I shoot a 17-50 f/2.8 from Tamron as a walkaround which is nice and sharp. The 55-300 (which I still have) is ok but not spectacular. I am not familiar with your Sigma 105mm (I shoot a 90mm Tamron Macro) but at least your 35mm (which I also have) should do just fine. Should you decide to get the D7200 make sure to calibrate the focus with all your lenses which is absolutely critical for best performance. I now shoot mostly prime lenses with the D7200 (Portraits and Macro) and use a D3300 (with the 17-50 or 35mm) for walkaround.

I'm not a Nikon user but based on all the raves about the D500 why wouldn't you upgrade to that body?

He photographs scenery and flowers. The AF system, processing system, etc., of the D500 would be overkill for his needs.

I must respectfully disagree. The Tamron 18-400 should make him very happy. It’s one of the best lens you could ever gets . It far exceeded my expectations. Nothing against prime lens they have their place, but you would need at least 4 primes to replace the Tamron. Who wants change lens that often on a trip? I really think you should give the Tamron a good look.

7200,the no aa filter, higher res sensors alone will give you more reach and better quality. Not to mention more buttons so you don't have to scroll through menus.

The greatly improved sensors will give you more reach and quality than the extra 100mm, Tammy is heavier than both nikons, although the 72 is heavier.
