Travel Conundrum

Some lengthy trips ahead and I have to skin a couple of cats:
Was planning on simply carrying my small Nikon camera bag (Body, 3 lenses, SD cards and other misc items). Would also carry my iPad Air (which has “Photos” and the subscribed Lightroom CC Mobile). Was planning to dump SD cards to my WD My Passport Wireless Pro 4TB HD, then copy cards to Photos, then import into LR Mobile. Would also likely keep the SD cards or additional backup. From there I could do some limited editing, export, post to social media sites, email, etc.
However, the LR mobile is much less featured than my daily driver: LR Classic. But, I could also simply worry about full PP until I get home.
So, will I be happy with this process, or would I be better to carry my 15” laptop (exclusively used in Post Processing). This would require a backpack to carry all of the gear in one bag and would cost $$. How do you all deal with edits and exporting while traveling?

I traveled for 2 weeks in France with nothing more than an iPad, the WD Passport WiFi drive and a bunch of SD cards, and a Fuji X-T20. I had no desire to carry a laptop, figuring I could view the day's shots on the iPad. The problem was that iOS would not "see" the Fuji RAW files, so I had to shoot RAW + JPEG which annoyed me to no end. I just wanted to see the files, my post processing workflow is far too complicated to do on a Tablet.
Since then, I've gotten a LaCie DJI Boss 2 Tb drive with SD slot, USB input which allows me to back up the D850's XQD cards via a card reader, or direct from SD from the Fuji. The LaCie app allows me to connect to the drive with a Lightning cable and preview RAW files. An added benefit is, I can download movies in MP4 format watch without the BS hassle of importing a film onto an iPad.

Your vacation is special time. Don't
clutter it up with chores that can be
more conveniently done later when
you're at home. If you feel pressure

Jeff, if your idea of a vacation is sitting on you duff and editing pics, you should bring a small PC and be even more happy!!! LoL
You won’t have time to take pics anyway! LoL
Leave all that extra junk home and use your phone for pics you just gotta post on the web!
It WAS just determined in a post last week that the editor of Nat Geo uses her phone to shoot for the mag, should be good enough for you too!!!
Vacations are for vacationing, your office is for editing! Have fun either way!!! 📷

I just take a whole lot of memory cards and also load the pics into my computer when I get home.
My wife would not travel with me as it would ruin our vacation together.

What did you do before you had all this peripheral weight and concerns about posting to "social media sites, email, etc"?

Business or pleasure trips? Unless these are strictly business trips, you could write a book on how to 'Ruin a Vacation.' Enjoy the trip, travel light, see the sights, photograph everything on your trip....FORGET Social Media while on vacation, those are the times you need to be 'Disconnected.' Have a great trip(s)

I'm treating myself to a 2 month road trip as a retirement gift early next year. Since I will be travelling by vehicle room for "stuff" isn't a big issue. Accomodations will be a combination of staying with family, motels and a bit of tenting. I'll be watching the advice given here for my planning!

Just take extra memory cards, leave the other stuff home (except if you want to communicate back home), and post process when you return. That's what I do and I'm able to enjoy without a lot of chores.

I'm with you, watching. We're heading to Scotland for two weeks in September and will be renting a car for the entire stay. However, still only plan to take the camera, a small tripod (ultrapod) and two lenses, one wide and one medium telephoto plus a few a small ancillary items. We go to Europe quite frequently by both air & ship and it always pays to travel light.
