My parents taught me to be polite, no matter what. It has served me well for 60+ years. Just bask in the moment, they are few and far between. A simple thank you is all that is required.

"Thank you" is enough, but sometimes I tell them what I had to go through and why to get the picture.

One thing I have learned here on the hog in the last year, well maybe two.

If you hand a non, or beginning photographer a $5,000 camera with a $5,000 lens, they are probably going to take a bad snapshot. Whatever quality camera you hand a professional level Photographer (and that includes a lot of amateurs), they are probably going to produce at least a "Wow" photo.

Now here's an interesting term, a professional level photographer. Just what is a professional level photographer?! It's always been my understanding that what makes a professional a professional isn't a level of skill. It simply means someone is engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation rather than as a pastime. I know a person who is a professional photographer. He works for a company that does injection molding and his job is to photograph and catalog the companies products and processes. Outside work he likes to ride his motorcycle; that's how I know him. I've actually handed him my Canon EOS 5D IV and Nikon D500 on separate occasions and he told me these cameras are very different from what he uses at work and would take a while to figure out how to use one.

I smile and say, "Of course it does. It's a Nikon". Now all you out there, BEFORE YOU GET ALL MAD AND POUNCE ON ME, I follow up with this bit of information. I tell them I love the work of a photographer named Art Wolfe. It is very good work and he uses Canons. So what's the question?

Before we fall down in the mire of all the petulence that seems to accompany ones preference of equipment, let me say this. One's choice of equipment has little to do with the quality of work produced by that equipment. The NRA says guns don't kill people....people kill people. Well, cameras don't take photos, people take photos. If you don't think that is true, think of someone you may know who spent $3,000, give or take, on a new Nikon or Canon or whatever and couldn't get a good pic out of it to save their lives, because they think the camera takes the pic, when the success or failure lies with the user and not the brand.
I smile and say, "Of course it does. It's a N... (show quote)

Guns are a tool that people use to kill people. If people didn't have the guns then people would not be killed by guns. It's all just how one arranges the words...

I know for a fact my $5000 Canon is perfectly capable of taking just as bad a photo as my $3000 Nikon. One of my dogs is bigger than the other and they are twins. My Canon can kick your Nikon's butt with its shutter release button tied behind its back. Is the gibber in gibber jabber the same as the gibber in gibberish?! Maybe the person who can't get a good pic out of their $3000 camera should read the manual. Time to head back to Amazon Prime...

She said she knew absolutely nothing about photography. I wrote that I felt badly after saying what I said to her. I guess I should now go out and let a train run over me to make amends............that ain't happening.

Guns are a tool to target shoot, and many other forms of competitive shooting. They are used to control over population of deer and other animals to keep herds healthy and provide millions of dollars to the government for wildlife management each year. There are hundreds of other uses for firearms including collecting them as works of art.
So before you make yourself look anymore foolish regurgitating the DNC talking points educate yourself on the truth.

I read a story once about a photographer who had his photos on display in a high end gallery. A woman, who was a renown chef, commented on his works with, "What wonderful photos! What kind of camera do you have?"
The woman wanted to impress some friends so she invited the photographer to supper that evening. "A small, intimate affair." After the meal, the photographer leaned back in his chair and said, "Mrs. Adams, that was a wonderful meal! What kind of stove do you use?"

"Thank you" is best in my opinion. Sometimes that leads to people asking me what they should buy. Then I say something like, "anything from that past few years is fine. You phone is really good too." And then talk about learning composition if they want to get into it.

The gist of this rather long thread is that it is the Photographer, not the camera.

But we have even longer threads on whether Nikon is better than Canon, or are DSLRs better than Mirrorless.

Hmmm

"Yes I also have very good pots and pans that creates fantastic gourmet meals as well" or "Ya, I used to be a terrible photographer until I bought it". The possibilities are endless and fun if done with much humor.

You fell into your own trap: people are not killed by guns, people are killed by other people who use guns to kill. If nobody had guns, the murderers would just use other tools, such as knives, baseball bats, frying pans, rocks, poison, vehicles, etc. The world is full of potential murder weapons.

Again, the problem with murderers is that they kill without legal justification; the tool is irrelevant.

Exactly. Better tools just allow us to achieve our desired results more efficiently, and with less inherent skills.
