My wife and I will be traveling to Italy soon and for convenience sake I'll be bringing my SX50. It'll only be for 11 days, but I'm sure I'll be taking plenty of photos and maybe a few movies. Around here I use a Sandisk Ultra 16 GB card. So my question to you seasoned travelers is this...what size card should I use ? 128 Pro or is that overkill ?

Well, this is just my way, but I would take a half dozen 16gb cards. Just keeping the eggs in different baskets and having enough room for all my shots.

I would take several smaller SD cards rather than one big one. The theory being if one card craps out you still have the images on the others. If you do decide on the larger capacity card, check to see if your camera will accept the larger cards. Some will not.

If you have enough you should take what you have.

If you need more, 32 Dems to be the current sweet spot.

The smallest SD cards I use are 64 GB. And, the fastest available. New one's are 128. Shots are recorded as both Raw and JPEG. If you are only shooting jpeg in the SX, then 64 is plenty.

Most of my cards are Sandisk 32GB. I would take 4 or 5 32GB cards on a trip of that length. That should be plenty of space if you are shooting mostly stills. You can get a lot of still shots from the SX50 on a 32GB card. (My travel camera is also a Canon SX50). Videos will use up your storage much more quickly. I generally agree with those who have expressed the thought that it is best not to have all your images on one card. Much safer if something should go wrong with the card.

I recommend that you buy some more SD cards, I have four and that is ample for my purpose, as BassmanBruce says do not put all your eggs in one place.
Have a great trip.

If one card goes bad, then you only have the recurring expense of retaking that part of the trip that was on the "bum" card.

It doesn't matter how fast the claimed read/write speed of the memory card is. The deciding factor is how fast your camera can write to it. Generally rather slower.

I use 64s but I format them, store my photos on the camera, download them directly from the camera to Lightroom and only when they are full remove the card and store the card as an addition backup of my images.

You didn't mention whether you will be shooting in RAW, Jpeg, or both and how many and how long videos will be. It matters, obviously, as the amount of space needed will vary. My camera has 2 SD card slots (Nikon) so my new rule of thumb is to put a large card (64 GB) in slot 2 designated "copy"and 8-16 GB cards in slot 1. Using smaller cards gives me the security that if the card goes south I won't lose much and the larger card is my backup in case something does happen. Once the images are downloaded into my PC I just re-format the smaller cards.

Using a camera with one slot I would use smaller cards for the same security issue.

If you take multiple cards, as has been suggested, invest in a good card wallet and establish a place, or places, to keep them. Be sure you have a reliable system for segregating the used from the unused cards. These are simple details that may fowl you up if you don't establish a system.

What does your camera manual say about SD card size that works in the camera
