Well controlled nut crackers, for when you want to extract, say, the pecan nut whole. The screw provides precise pressure that avoids mashing the nut.

Ebay has one with a bowl selling for $69. Do a Google search for antique simple round wooden nut crackers and you will find many images and some sales. My grandmother used to have one with a bowl. It was less time consuming than the decorative ones when processing nuts for baking cakes and pies.
