Get the EZ66 Guide to Route 66. It is in the 4th edition I believe. GREAT spiral bound guide that has detailed maps of all rte. 66 alignments, directions through towns and to various points of interest and even some fun "scavenger hunt" games. I've done the Mother Road several times and still reply on my older guides to plot and drive my course (and some targeted photo-ops).
Two weeks is a good timeframe to do the trip. try to stay at the renovated motor courts along your journey as it all adds to the adventure.

Few years ago I shot a brochure for the State of Illinois, along with a team of other photographers, dividing the state up in to quadrants, to shoot it in a week. I got Springfield area. Lincoln was from there and the Rt 66 area through Springfield is a rich area to shoot. Enjoy the trip.

Save some time for the end, with Route 66 ending at the Santa Monica Pier. The immediate area is amazing people area, with Venice just to the south and Malibu to the north on Pacific Highway. You also have the Third Street Promenade a few blocks away and beautiful Ocean Avenue running along the cliffs overlooking the Pacific. Here are 2 pics from my recent visit to southern California. One shows the Pier, the end of Route 66, and the second shows the pier from the south, overlooking some homes on the PCH.

Definitely Tucumcari Under the Stars. They have a great restaurant you can eat breakfast at before you take off in the morning, that is, unless you want to spend the day at the lake!

I live in Amarillo, Texas (on route 66) If you email me privately (ecommons@suddenlink) I can tell you of special place in Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico that are not part of the tourist stops and since the route changed several time, where the old routes are and what's there.

In Malibu, the Pacific Coast Highway presents an historical flavor to the senses. Let me see if I can locate my picture of Malibu pier.

My husband and I did it last Fall... it took us 15 days to go from California to Chicago... we just took our time and my best advice is to get "EZ66 Guide for Travelers, 4th edtion, by Jerry McClanahan. It will map your trip using the old roads and has lots of interesting facts and things to see along the way. It was a great trip and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Something interesting and exciting everyday. We took over 8,000 pictures and many of those were through the window as we were driving along... just so much to see and experience. We even stopped to see Jerry McClanahan and had him sign our book!! just a note: the book is like the old fashoned triptik that AAA used to use. It will have a map with the start and finish on a page and all the things to see and do within that area. I can't recommend it highly enough. Have a great time!!

Hi all,
Once again I can't thank you all enough for all of your advice, suggestions and overall help! I only wish that we could now make this at least a one month trip instead of the two weeks we have. With all of your suggestions I don't think two weeks is enough time, but since that's all we have, we'll just have to make the best of it and pick and choose our stops. I'm sure it'll still be a great trip!

Life is not that short. You don't have to do it all in one gulp. We did it in segments... and not all of them connected to the previous one. We decided quality was better than quantity and spent more time in each area.

Hi Ron,
I agree with you. Whatever we get to see in the two weeks we have will be sort of an introduction to Route 66. We can always go back and spend more time in the sections we really liked.

I skimmed thru all the posts and surprised I did not see any recommendations on the Petrified Forest justy outside Holbrook AZ. Just left of the car RT 66 is marked by the telephone poles. The bottom photo is in the park right behind the Rainbow Forest Visitor Center.
