Viewing Your Pictures on TV

The following is a question from a friend. Since I've never attempted to show photos on TV via flash drive or any other method, I am unable to provide him with an answer. I thought that with the number of diverse members of UHH someone could provide a solution.

I've begun selectively putting some of my better pictures on flash drives to view on TV via the USB port. Although they must be .jpg's rather than .tif's. they show up very good on UHD, especially when they fill the screen. Most of my pictures are saved in .tif, so I've been using Lightroom to export the selected pictures to .jpg. My problem comes when I plug the flash drive into the TV. All the pictures have been saved on the flash drive, but when I open the folder on TV to what I would call the "thumbnails," they are all there, but in reverse order. If I then reverse the order on the flash drive, hoping the display on TV will then appear in the right sequence, they're still in reverse order. After trying this several times, I find the last picture will become the first picture, with everything else still in reverse. I've just about resigned myself to running the pictures backward on TV in order to view them in the original order. Now, I've given you a lot more information than you care to hear, but wondered if you have ever viewed your pictures on TV, and what were the results?

Any help provided will be greatly appreciated.

I have not viewed images on my TV, yet.
How are they named?
Does the TV order by filename or date (created)? Is it selectable? What does the TV manual say about looking at pictures?
What order were they placed on the flash drive?

I don't have answer to your questions, so I will have to email my friend and respond later.

Thanks Longshadow.

I like to put my pictures up on my TV once in awhile. I have never had that problem with flash drives. My only problem is that sometimes the TV won't recognize the flash drive. My twelve year old plasma tv doesn't like any card over 8 gigs.

If the reversed files on your friends card are the same name and size as the first effort, the TV may be reading it as the same card and just indexing them the same. Try deleting a couple of files or adding new ones and see if it helps. Totally out of my depth, but worth a try.

You probably first want to look at the sort-order of how the images are selected from the Library Module for export from Lightroom. Are they sorted by Capture Time, Added Order, or something else?

Next, look at the file naming you apply during the export, if any. If you rename the files at export, can you control / force the correct sort order? From the drop-down box of options, can you simply name the files in the order you desire?

Looks like CHG CANON has got you pointed in the right direction, but I'll throw another idea at you if you have Apple devices. I have put jpgs on a thumb drive, but went to Apple TV instead. You can see all the images on your various Apple devices at uhd just like on a computer monitor.

You can use one of the cables that come with your camera, plug into the YELLOW RCA plug(video in) on TV. In menu find live view and activate. Verify this according to your camera manual. I use this way to shoot macro on a table on a 19" diagonal bought for the purpose. It works great, photoing and viewing. You will be controlling the camera as usual, but start out on a larger screen than most computers, viewing all on the TV screen. Focus improved many fold for me.

Have you ever viewed your pictures on your tv .., answer .., yes ..although I have an expensive 4K OPPO that accepts the memory flash SD card ..and send it’s contents to my Samsung SUHD 65” .. I prefer to transfer the shots to my Samsung Note 8 ..and that syncs up to the tv allowing me to zoom .. and fill the screen ..
The attached shot was from a fellow Hog rmalarz ..I downloaded to my Note 8 .. just a sample ..

I regularly make "slide shows" to show family and friends on a TV. My MO is to number the images as I put them onto a flash drive. The TV will then list them in numerical order and "run" the slide show accordingly. Files from newer DSLRs can get pretty big and be very slow to load. I have found that things go more smoothly if I reduce the size of the images (I use 2000 pixels wide) before I place them on the flash drive.

You might also try this: in times past, the DOS file name order is different than the windows explorer file name order. If the TV is reading DOS names, you might not have the order you think, given windows will have ordered them for explorer. I've used fatsorter.exe; it's old, version 1.0.4.0, but worked when I needed to order episode files for playback via a media playback box. Google and softpedia will find.

Check out Pro Show at photodex.com. You can easily make slide shows with music. Lots of samples of their effects and tutorials. They offer a free trial. Two versions, I use Pro Show Gold, it's about $70. Outputs to MP4's and to different devices, including thumb drives.

One more choice. Amazon Prime account users have access to prime photos to store your treasures. You can make albums, view a slide show etc. Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote | Streaming Media Player, $39.00 but runs on sale about $24.00, for TV viewing. It is something my husband can run from the recliner, (a Christmas gift) therefore popular in this house. But I miss using the old style Wii that automatically played background music with a slide show. However it chose the order of viewing for the pics.

I use Apple TV and view my Mac Photos saved in Mac Photos Shared Files. The Apple TV is a converter that turns a dumb TV into a smart TV, we use it to view Netflix as well. With shared files you can post a photo from your phone or computer and it will be sent to others you have invited to share with you to be viewed on their iPhones. Very slick!
