Looking to replace old printer NOT USED for producing decent image prints for one that does! Would appreciate
Thoughts on brand and/or model #.......not museum quality needed and will not be printing greater than 8x10's.

Physical size is a bit of concern but very interested in brand and model #'s.

thanks to everyone providing feedback !

Why not consider using COSTCO. They print on Fuji Crystal paper and it is a chemical process. Just upload and pick up or they mail them. Great quality.

The Canon pixma Pro-100 is quite large but for the price you can’t beat it. I know you said you won’t be printing larger than 8x10 and this printer will do 13x19 but it’s a great deal with the rebates they’ve been offering for a long time now. You can get it for less than $150 after rebates. Sometimes less. Heck with the 4th of July holiday I wouldn’t doubt it if you can do even better. B&H of Adorama are the best places to order one if you aren’t in the NJ or NY area.

Since size is a factor and you don't need a printer that prints larger than 8.5 by 11, the Canon TS 9020 may be exactly what you are looking for. It does excellent color prints and amazing black and white photo prints. It also does really nice document printing but it excels at photo prints. It's about 1/3 the size of the Pixma Pro series printers and it's wireless.
I have 2 Pixma Pro printers and the TS 9020 and all prints 8.5 X 11 or smaller are done on the TS 9020. The TS stands for touch screen.
Plus, no need to order from some NY warehouse store, you can pick one up at your local Best Buy.

The Canon Pro-100 suggested by Jeep Daddy is exactly what you do NOT need. It has a huge footprint, and weighs about 50#.

Morrison 1116 suggests a Canon TS9020 ... outstanding. It was replaced by the 9120 and betcha you can not tell the difference in A vs B. Adorama was dumping the the TS9020 for $50 including shipping - AMAZING !

Print quality excellent. Text is printed from a text black pigmented cart... rest of the carts including a photo black are dye based.

Ink is a big cost in printing... the TS9020 has separate large carts... replacement after market carts are very reasonable. I bought 4 sets of 6 carts for less than $40.... AMAZING !
Any time you get two AMAZING ! from me that is a very strong recommendation.

In theory, printing your shots is a great idea. Having done it, I can say that now that Costco and Sams and others have incredible prices to print, and you simply upload your shots and go pick them up..... it is almost impossible to beat the print quality and the price. (At Sams, be sure to look at the box that says “leave my photo alone”. I leave this checked so that “their” computer doesn’t change my shots.

I recently got rid of my older, very large Epson printer and bought a Canon Pixima iP110 portable photo printer. It weighs about 4 pounds, very small footprint and will print up to 8x11. It's a high resolution printer that does a decent job and pretty much matches what I see on my computer screen- yay!
Really all I want to do is print some 5x7 pictures to send to family AND get a preview of the image file before I send it off to an Internet print service. My thought is to have a look and see what it will look like in print before I invest the $ getting a large print.

I have used a Canon Pixma 922 multi function printer for making prints, up to 8.5 x 11. The prints are of excellent quality. The results have been compared with prints made on a Canon Pro 100 printer, and while there are subtle differences, they do compare favorably. A while ago, you could buy the MX 922 for $59.00 with a full set of cartridges included. Now I see the price is up to about $79.00 at B&H.

If your serious about printing, and if space, weight or an extra $50 cost are not major factors, the Canon Pro 100 is the way to go. The quality is superior.

DPullum I did explain that this printer isn't exactly what he wants, but it is a great deal on a great printer. It's $119 after rebates now. Let the OP decide. True, it's big and true, it's does print larger prints than the OP needs.

handsab;

I'll tell you my Horror stories: I have over a thousand dollars of useless printers with clogged heads: one $850 Canon 13X19 format 10 ink, and 2 cheapie Epsons. They are all inkjet. With disuse, inkjet heads clog up with ink- usually the Cyan. I had the head replaced in the Canon twice for about $100, but, then Canon, in their GREEDY Marketing, quit making the 'replacement' heads. Instead they made a 'replacement' printer for another $850. NO MORE CANON FOR ME! Same with Epson (only dif is that one doesn't hurt so much when a $59 printer goes 'belly up'!
Solution? Buy a color Laser printer. The color is just as good; the only real dif is the demarcation between colors is not quite as sharp (still very minimal), so ultimate sharpness is not as much.
But you said ultimate sharpness wasn't your main desire . . . so, there's you solution. And you can print forever with a Laser printer (almost- I haven't found 'Forever' yet).
The best description between an inkjet and Laser, is that a Laser print looks more like a fine painting than a print. They are a bit higher; my 8X10, 2-sided printer, cost $350 and aftermarket toner kits (all 3 colors +black was less than $100 and works just as well as the $400 Brother set.
My take, anyway. Any questions, just leave a quarter on the counter.

My brother hogger, I hear you.
Ok here is my two cents worth on this.
UNLESS you are printing numerous prints on a daily/monthly/yearly output, I kinda read you are not. Just take it to Cosco.
I do and I know real Professional photographers who send there stuff there.
Here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, we have a couple of Coscos who have the fuji chemical printers and the prints are GREAT !
For 1.79 for an 8x10 the quality is unbeatable.
I have a color ink jet printer and a laser jet for regular stuff.
No matter what paper I use. Cosco beats the crap out of anything I want to print to either give away or sell.
Yea yea yea you will be slammed with replies about this and that printer. Which are are good advice, but, depending on your printing out put, consider just having it done somewhere else in the main time;
While doing this, you can research your needs and printers and narrow it down to one which will meet your needs.
There are a lot of good printers but the costs are ridiculous on the ink.
I will be where you are in a couple of months so I too will be reviewing my options.
For now, IF you want quality prints, just shoot them to Cosco and let them knock it for you.

I have always relied on Canon printers for printing pictures. Currently, I’m using a Pro 10, which is too big for your needs (EXCEPTIONAL prints, though). I also had a $50 Canon Pixma MG6620, on which I would print the occasional 4x6 and it did a good job. I ruined it by using off-brand ink & wish I would have replaced my Canon Pixma with this TS 9020. Instead, I purchased a Brother printer, mainly for the savings on ink, since I only needed it as an all-in-one. Just for kicks, I did try printing a 4x6 picture and the Brother does an INCREDIBLY LOUSY job. Also, it does not print on Vellum, which I need to do quite often (I learned how to trick it, though). The Brother does everything else quite well.

Moral of the story: For pictures, get a Canon!!

EDIT: I do send most of my prints out for printing (I use Smug Mug because I can get them on luster paper). However, I always like the ones I print on my Canon printers better! I don’t have a Costco near me, nor a membership.

Hey Everyone! Great feedback, opinions and suggestions. Just what I was hoping to see so thanks again. I found a Canon TS9020 on the "clearance rack" and bought it. We'll see but as has been said, looking forward to some decent
Prints. FYI, read other reviews between the TS9020 and TS9120 (new replacement version) and learned Canon has
Scrapped the grey tank for a blue tank which some say provides a "bluish" cast to prints and several prefer the 9020
For this reason.
