Late yesterday I was switching back and forth between the 200-500 and the G2. As the light diminished, the G2 was struggling to lock focus and I switched to the 200-500.
Not perfect, but not bad at F8 and 480mm.

Nice photos. My Nikon 200-500 performs similarly. It's good to know that photos from all these lenses are of a similar standard. I could have been steered towards the Tamron, but I'm more than happy with my Nikon, but that extra reach would certainly be nice.
Like I said, they are all pretty close. But I am a little OCD about sharpness, and found the G2 and Sport to have just a tiny bit more contrast and acuity.
Yea just read some interest comparisons and the G2 is looking real good especially for the price

Tamron has made huge changes from the G1 to the G2
Ok guys you and the many reviews have sold me. The Tammy G2 is it. Think I'll pull the trigger in a few days. Thanks
Royce, good choice you’ll be pleased with the 200-500.

That's not what he said he's buying.

You’re right, not sure how I missed that other than I haven’t had my coffee this morning.
Still on the fence leaning to the Sigma GS
You?? I'm the one that is confused !! So much information. I will sort it out

Do you have a local camera shop close by. If so I'd go there and see for myself if they carry all 3 lenses. Nothing beats first hand playing with prospects
Bought my 200-500 before they were in stock at a NYC mail order shop--never did that before! When it arrived, I went to a nature preserve and took 200+ pictures of birds, some moving and some perched. When spring rolled around, it was used for HS outdoor sports and captured at least 1000+ pictures. Used it for a goal tender soccer camp and over the course of 3 days, racked up 7000 shots and was able to stand in the middle of the fields and capture all 4 quadrants. Grandson plays HS lacrosse and the D500 and 200-500 setup was all I used for the season.
It's a superb lens for those of us who don't have $6-12,000 to spend. BTW, I've used it on a Nikon D3, D7000 in addition to the D500. The only bad pictures were the fault of the photographer, not the lens.
I guess I'm telling you to buy it and enjoy it because it's my favorite lens for outdoor tele shots. BTW, I am a retired UPS guy and not a retired Nikon rep lol.
Good luck
I had a similar dilemma choosing between the Sigma Sport 150-600 and the Nikon 200-500 and decided on the latter because it was smaller and therefore easier to travel with and hand hold. Both are great, and I’m sure the Tamron is as well. I had to go to B&H on a New York trip and hold each lens before deciding though. There isn’t a nearby photography store, all were crushed by the internet. After a few thousand shots I have absolutely no regrets about buying the Nikon, but I think you will get a lot of enjoyment from any of the three lenses. You can’t go wrong, which is a nice position to be in.
