Stay in Holbrook, AZ and visit the Petrified Forest NP, just down the road outside of town. Lots of famous 66 motels in Holbrook.

....and don't forget the Wigwam Village

Not direct answer but happen to watch this 2-3 weeks ago - had to relocate link. Will give idea some of what you will see/photograph plus drone view of many areas. Worth the 53 mins.

In Peach springs, stop in the
Hualapai Tribe Enterprise visitor center.
Get a pass to go on tribal lands.
Go to Diamond creek road ( just down the road ) if you have a vehicle with some ground clearance you will in about 2 hours be at the bottom of the grand canyon at a beach on the colorado river.

Taking a two week road trip on Route 66 from Chicago to L.A. Looking for suggestions from anyone who has done the trip for stops along the way and any must see photo ops!

Meteor Crater.
Definitely La Posada in Winslow, AZ is a must stop to spend the night. While there look at the new high school I designed.
In Flagstaff the Lowell Observatory where Pluto was discovered, Walnut Canyon Indian Ruins.
Lots of other places as mentioned.
One place seldom visited is Sunset Crater it seems, beautiful volcano and park with lava flows and ice caves.
All these are along the route.

How far into L.A. are you planning to take Route 66? If you can figure out the route east of Glendora, CA let me know. It is a nightmare to follow through Pasadena.

Very true. Even worse was our experience. We arrived on the afternoon of May 5th (for the unaware, like we were, that is Cinco de Maya). Traffic was at a crawl, every park was wal-to-wall people, and there was nary a parking space anywhere. A local guide would have been a Godsend.

You need books - at least these two:

Route 66 Dining & Lodging Guide - 17th Edition - Spiral Bound (Books)
National Historic Route 66 Federation
Route 66: EZ66 GUIDE For Travelers - 4TH EDITION (Books)
Jerry McClanahan, National Historic Route 66 Federation

Stop in St. Louis and get a Ted Drew's Frozen Custard. The original Concrete is world famous.

Safe travels!

Williams, AZ. Cool little town located near the Southern Rim of Grand Canyon.

Brendan Van Son who is a travel photographer recently did the Route 66 trip and has vlogged it day by day on Youtube. It may be fun for you to watch and perhaps glean some useful information. He is an excellent vlogger.

There will be photo opportunities throughout the entire route. A really intriguing place to stay is The Wigwam Motel in Holbrook.
