Post processing software for IR

Good morning all,

I'm just getting back into photography and these digital cameras are well I'll say different. Anyway, I'm looking for suggestions for a post processing program for color swapping and all the other great stuff that can be done with digital infrared imaging. Any and all suggestions are appreciated. If it matters I'm a Canon user.

Thanks,
Scott

Photoshop and Lightroom is a great place to start -

Scott, I don't know if the software itself is available, but when Sigma built the SD9/SD10 and later the SD14/Sd15 DSLR, they used the Foveon Sensor. Those four camera's could be converted to IR by the simple removal of a filter in front of the Foveon Sensor. Today, Sigma still offers the Foveon Sensor in their various Quattro models. Unique and almost a cult camera.

Since the Foveon sensor lent itself well to IR, Sigma provided a software that quided people into post processing Infrared capture. The software was packaged with the camera, i believe. I had a Sigma SD14 camera (14MP) but not the software. I am shy on more information, since I did not get documentation. I did not use the IR feature even though the removal of the filter to convert was very simple, pulling the filter out from in front of the Foveon Sensor. I have considered getting a Quattro to try the most current Foveon sensor.

So, you may want to research Sigma's support of IR on the their camera's. I recall there being quite a following for Foveon and much in IR. SD14 and SD15 DSLR's are quite available at low prices on eBay. I was disappointed that the long sought and awaited SD16 never came to market. The Quattro in various models took the place of DSLR. In fact I think they were mirrorless and preceded the market in mirrorless.

Most recently there have been versions of the Sigma called the Merrill. Apparent enhancements of the Quattro which is mirrorless and is quite talked about in Sigma camera circless, boh in DSLR and mirrorless. Like the Sigma DP3 Merrill.

This site has a downloadable Photoshop action to do the channel swap and other IR false color procedures:

Sigma now owns Foveon. The DP3 has a 46 Mp foveon sensor.

You can easily accomplish the IR look in ACR, it does not take much more than a minute to do!

It may look something like IR, but it can't really match the look of real IR.

I have an older Pentax K-100D camera converted for IR. It actually has a CCD sensor so it works well for IR. I use Photoshop / ACR for processing my IR. I do the usual R - B channel swap. Can any other program do that? And from there conversion to (IR) B&W is interesting too.

But I'd suggest mastering normal color digital photography first.

Also IR can be fun and interesting to manipulate with PP software, but it can also be tricky and frustrating. I've found that Ps CS6 at least seems to "know" somehow that my RAW IR image files and PSD files are not normal or true RGB files so some Ps functions and tools will work with these files. A bit like the weirdness you get from Grey Scale Files with Ps. Could Lr be any better in that respect? Any feedback on that from other UHH IR buffs who have Lr?

Gimp will do the color swap for IR and it's a free program. Often called a Photoshop clone.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and comments. I was hoping there was post processing software that can be used for both IR and visual light photograghy.....makes the learning curve so much shorter. To Gene and John, I appreciate the links so very much, many thanks!

Hate to show the same images over, but here are a few, I think they do match it pretty close
