I have two customers shooting Canon 1DX MKII bodies that have NEVER been taken out of AUTO mode.[/quote]

Why is that scary? I would not assume that someone who always use an auto mode (in the case of the 1DX it's A, S or P and certainly not the green Auto) doesn't know how to use a camera properly.

Ah, mea culpa! I'm a Nikon guy, didn't realize that was the top of the line FX with no PHS mode!

Using your original premise, and not all the variables others are throwing in from their postings, then here is an experiment for you...
1> Place your camera anywhere pointing at anything, with any settings. Set timer for 2(5,10) seconds and step back until it ALL BY IT SELF trips shutter and takes a photograph.
2> Now, without ANY type of camera, you as a person try to take a photograph.
3> Compare results - my camera wins every time! <LOL>

Interesting. Is a computer better than the person using it? Do self driving cars drive better than the driver? Does a certain tool drill a better hole than we could on our own?
Extending these questions we get, Why is their air? Why do we exist? What is the meaning of life?
And my favorite, Does it really matter? Like the song says "we are all only dust in the wind".

Bebu, you'll know your camera is better than you are when it concludes the manual settings you dialed in are crappy and refuses to take the picture....

Av or Tv on Canon...no A or S...LOL...

Whatever gets you through the night
It's all right, it's all right
It's your money or your life
It's all right, it's all right
Don't need a sword to cut through' flowers
Oh no, oh no
Whatever gets you through your life
It's all right, it's all right
Do it wrong, or do it right
It's all right, it's all right
Don't need a watch to waste your time
Oh no, oh no
Hold me, darlin', come on, listen to me
I won't do you no harm
Trust me, darlin', come on, listen to me
Come on, listen to me; come on, listen, listen
Whatever gets you to the light
It's all right, it's all right
Out of the blue, or out of sight
It's all right, it's all right
Don't need a gun to blow you mind
Oh no, oh no
Hold me, darlin', come on, listen to me
I won't do you no harm
Trust me, darlin', come on, listen to me
Come on, listen to me, come on, listen, listen...

Money vs Brains....
Money doesn't discriminate in my experience...

Best,
Todd Ferguson

That is because the grass is always greener across the street.

In many cases the guy took 200 pictures of the same thing and one came out great and that's the one he shows you.

The first really in-depth digital camera I own is the Nikon D700. I read through the entire manual while the battery was charging. I then read through the manual with the camera in hand and turned on. I looked at all the whiz-bang settings that were possible. I tried shooting in P for a few days. I really felt digital was somewhat a waste of time, as I wasn't seeing anything really impressive. I was then inspired to switch to M and concern myself with "classic" features, ISO, shutter speed, and f-stop. Things improved from there. A few more steps up the learning stairway and things really improved. My camera has never taken a photograph without an immense amount of assistance from me.

Now the disturbing aspect is that there are products being introduced on the market to make decisions the photographer should be making. Their aim is to reduce the photographer to a camera carrier and button pusher.

The Camera can only see pixels not Art or Mood.

As a pilot, I am amazed at how many pilots have lost basic airmanship and navigation skills by depending on the highly capable avionics we now have in the instrument panel. If they have an electrical failure, they can’t get from point A to point B anymore by just reading a chart and looking out the window. I began my photography hobby in the early 60’s with a Minolta SRT-101. The real innovation of that model was a built in light meter. Took some damn good photos with that relic. Now cameras have more computing power than some recent desktops and people still agonize over camera features and their skills. Subject, lighting and composition are the primary determinants of the quality of a photo, no different than 50+ years ago. All of the current camera capabilities just make some things easier. But, if you don’t get the first three correct, it doesn’t matter. While I am now an aged rookie, my advice is learn photographic basics and then increase your skills with the hardware.
