He said $8000 for GEAR - that includes lenses. Why do you have to come in and insult people you don't even know?

Canon 1DX Mk2, 5,500, Canon 70-200 F2.8 III, about 2,000. That will do the sports you mentioned and you'll have 500 left.

An alternative that will work would be the 5D Mk 4 with a 24-70 f2.8 and a 70-200 f2.8 all for about 7,000. This is what I shoot sports with and have had reasonably good results. My results are limited by my abilities and not the limits of the equipment.

Since you already have a 7D II which is a good sports camera, you could just go with a 24-70 f2.8 and a 70-200 f2.8 and save some money unless you just want go spring for a FF.

This is just an opinion. Your mileage might vary.

I have a hell of a lot more than that invested in equipment and still have things I need from time to time. I don't have a lot of money, but then I don't have a lot of brains either so I guess it evens out.

In reality, 8,000 is really not an excessive amount for high quality camera equipment. A good camera and 3 or 4 good lenses and you are there.

Thanks Bill
Looking at the Sigma 120-300 2.8 sport for my hockey shooting. Also the sigma 150-600mm for baseball. What's you opinion on these lenses? Also the Canon 100-400 L is ii. I'm concerned it may be to slow for indoor hockey without bumping up to a high iso.
Thanks

I don't know anything about the Sigmas other than they usually get great reviews. The 120-300 should be all you would need for your sports. It may be a little long for indoor hockey depending on how big the arena is and whether you decide to go with the FF. It will be really long indoors on a crop. In reality, I get along with a 70-200 for baseball on a FF so if you are shooting on a crop it would be plenty for that.

As far as the 100-400 f4.5 to 5.6, I had the same f stop range in the 70-300 Canon L. I sold it and got the 70-200 f2.8 because it just didn't have enough light for indoor shooting.

One advantage of a FF in the 5d Mk4 or the 1DX is you are able to bump the ISO considerably higher than you can with a crop frame.

By the way, until you brought it up, I was not aware of the Sigma 120-300 so my wife will quite possibly be really pissed at you.

Well as I am a Nikon Man .., let’s start it’s a Nikon D500 ...used (eBay) or Refurbished ..$1,200-$1,500 ...lenses.., a Nikon 70-200 2.8 as sports could be outdoors or in ...

Then .. a long lens reach if you are sitting way back .. up in the bleachers ...say a budget minded Nikon 200-500 5.6 outdoor baseball .. and a mono pod ..

You can do the research on the net regarding the sports lenses .. their weakness and strengths ..vs cost ..

Start out with a great sports camera ...D500 and the chase down the lenses ....If it were me .. I would get the D500 and then go rent the lenses you have narrowed down .., take them to your tipical sporting events you plan on shooting ... then you’ll know exactly what lens to purchase that goes well with the D500.

Good luck .. let us know the results .. that will indeed help others like yourself .....
