Question regarding firmware updates...

Hello everyone,

I have received notice of an update for my Nikon D850. This is something I have not done in the past so I am concerned that any settings I have changed in the menus might not be carried forward with an update. Do I need to be concerned with this? Please share your knowledge and experience with doing updates. (I searched for firmware updates but found nothing recent)

Thanks,
Dave

Dave, I've updated both my D700 and D800 and nothing changed any of my menu settings, the few that I use.

I have done 3 different firmware updates on my Nikon D5300. My menu settings have never been changed by the update.

Dave - Another great thing about Firmware updates is that if you miss one and later install the latest one, it will include any previous updates with it. For example, let’s say your camera’s Firmware has been updated from v1.00 to v1.02 and later to v.1.03 but you missed v1.02. When you install v.1.03, any improvements that were in v.1.02 will be present after you’re done. /Ralph

I've done three firmware updates on my Nikon D800. The only problem was with the last one when it left my Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art lens without autofocus. This was solved by buying the Sigma dock and upgrading the Sigma firmware.

I updated my D850 about 2 days ago, it was simple and everything worked.

Follow the instructions to the letter. The one problem I had was I loaded the update onto an SD card and had that set as the secondary card. Whichever card you want to use to update must be set as the primary card.

Since you have never done this before, follow the steps carefully. It is a simple process but some skip a step or misread something and get all flummoxed.

Yes, most of the time a firmware update will put your settings back to default settings. That is most of them will. But your date and time should remain and you shouldn't have to worry about that. But if you have some special settings, it is best to sit down and go through all your menus after a firmware update and put them back the way you had them so that you don't wind up out on a shoot and have to deal with it on the spur of the moment.

So I now have completely opposite opinions, don't know what is correct...

I have just completed firmware updates on all three of my Nikon bodies - 2 days ago. All went fine. While on the Nikon firmware update site, you can see what has changed in the latest update as well as a wealth of other information about your specific firmware. I suggest you check that out. It is very easy to do, but follow instructions exactly. Best of luck

I upgraded firmware yesterday, and saw nothing to be concerned about.
