I've discovered that back button focus is not as sharp as shutter focus on my D3200. Is that a universal problem or only has to do with my particular camera?
How did you determine this?
took two pictures of the same scene. one with bb other with ff. then I opened it up with the editor and zoomed in and bb was out of focus

You may be making the same mistake I did when first using BBF. You must put your aiming dot on what you want in focus and immediately release it. Then recompose your shot before pressing the shutter release button. Only hold the BBF down if you are tracking a moving subject. When I first started using BBF I would hold the button down while firing the shutter release button and when I recomposed the shot, I may have switched the focus point away from my initial focus point.
Sounds like operator error to me.

To investigate further, please post both of these images as a response to this thread and store the originals. Using these specific examples, we can help you analyze the technical details and identify potential sources of the different results.
yep.... I was changing "shutter-release button AE-L" not "assign AE-L"
but I still don't understand why those flower pictures were out of focus

Apologies, I missed the NEF attachments you made earlier. These pink flowers show the issue. Where have you obtained your BBF instructions? You need to update the focus mode to AF-C (Nikon for auto focus continuous). Then, when shooting,
hold down the assigned button for BBF the entire time when shooting. When you're done shooting and release your finger from the shutter button, then release the finger on the BBF button. A related usage note, turn off the focus confirmation "beep" when turning on the setting AF-C.

There is no difference in sharpness if focus is achieved, either with the shutter button.or whichever button you assigned for your bbf. It must have something to do with your camera, or the way you set it up!

Curious! why turn off the beep?,

On my Nikons, the beep is auto off when in continuous shooting mode. No need to turn it off at all.

i was playing around with my DF and figued that out. i wonder why the beep shuts off and on when you switch the shooting mode. there should be some kind of reasaon?! anyway mine is off for now.

The reason is that when in continuous shooting mode with continuous focussing, the beep would be an almost continuous annoying sound as the camera constantly regains focus.
