If it is for your home... I will be no help as I have cable; however, if it is for camping/RV I have Dish and chose it because it offers a month-to-month plan for RVers (when I pay for a month I get service, when I don't pay it is off). Since getting it I have, in general, found other campers agree.

Neither. I don't watch the brainwasher, I mean TV, and very rarely watch a movie.

Had both DTV and Dish, plus all the cable choices. Both DTV and Dish started out good. Both ended up terrible, especially compared to better alternatives like streaming video and digital free antenna reception. Worked for DTV and got it free. Platinum package (for employees) had a lot of good content choices, but I'd never pay $120 or more per month, and put up with all the obnoxious ads if it wasn't free. Dish Network was terrible too, especially after they stripped out all the good content, like art history shows and special concert venues. Comcast, Time Warner, and Charter are also terrible, and I've had all three. All paid cable and satellite TV broadcasting is over priced, commercial-laced, junk programming. They are a dying business model for most mainstream home entertainment solutions in 2018. But, sports bars and airlines still use DTV, and some households will continue to use them for various reasons. But the growth rate is flat and the glory days are gone. They did it to themselves by being too greedy and paying too much to content providers (ESPN, ST, HBO, Stars, CM, etc). The end result is ALWAYS the same... Too expensive, too many commercials, and very limited (or repetitive) content choices. Much Better, lower cost alternatives exist today.

I cut the cable cord and the satillite feed over 4 years ago, and have never been happier. Netflix + Amazon Prime + free digital antenna reception = more content, little to zero ads, and four times cheaper ($22/mo VS $88 or more). Those prices will vary somewhat, but the saving ratios are accurate. Plus now you can add HBO (and more) a la cart to your steaming solution (I.e. Roku, Smart TVs, Play Station), for $10/ month/each, without having to buy DTV, Dish, Comcast, TW, or Charter. Or, you can use Filmrise and other channels for free and put up with occasional ads. You just need to get the best deal you possible can on Intenet service from the ISP that serves your area and buy a streaming hardware device (Roku, Chrome, Smart TV, Sony PS, etc). The rest is realitively easy and inexpensive.

I got fed up with Comcast cable several years ago and switched to DirecTV. I have been very happy with DirecTV and have no plans to change. I doubt I have had 5 minutes of downtime per year, while it seemed like I had outages of several hours every 3-4 months with Comcast. It's not inexpensive, but neither was Comcast.

Have never had cable anything else. Fortunately live in an area with LOTS of broadcast channels, 2,4,5,24,28,40,46,56,58 with 2 to 4 sub channels each, at least 30 total.

I've actually looked into dumping DISH in favor of Netflix TV. I've compared the channels that Netflix TV provides and it almost comes close to providing my needs.....if it only carried the channel that Lt. Kenda Homocide Hunter came on I might switch.

I just learned that the 2018 season is coming up, otherwise I might jump. So....it's not either Dish or Direct TV....there are some other alternatives out there as well.

Yeah HULU is the only streaming service that carries that program. However, it is available for purchase with several others.

I'll check HULU out again. With as much as I'm paying for DISH, I'm open to an alternative. The other consideration that I will have is the ESPN channels in order to get most of the Michigan football games.

So here is a follow up question, since I already answered this one. All of the TV that we watch is time shifted. It is almost never convenient to watch in real time, especially when something we want to watch comes on in the middle of the night, like a certain movie on TCM. We may record multiple prime time shows at the same time. The DirecTV DVR allows for recording of up to 4 programs on different channels simultaneously.
Can this be done with any of the streaming services that some have mentioned here?

The other issue is whether anything other than traditional cable or satellite will actually carry the channels we watch in one package or will there have to be multiple subscriptions? TCM, BBC America, HBO, TVLand, INSP, HLN, History Channel etc. I know that I can get the networks over the air, as well as the local subchannels. But let's say I manage to make all of this available without paying DirecTV. Then the time shifting issue comes into play. I know that there are DVRs out there, but it seems much more convenient to use the one that comes with Cable or Satellite.

I'm not promoting them. Read my other post. I'm just pointing out some issues that I'm thinking about as I get ready to move and have to decide what I'm going to use for TV (and internet).

Good thing it wasn't Nikon vs. Canon.

I've had Dish for 10 years. No problems, except when it snows.

If you've got the 250 channel selection, that's probably been 10-12K over that period.
