The islands east of Freeport are very beautiful and unique. Harpswell, Orr’s, Baileys islands with great roads through them.

I am going to be celebrating my 70th birthday by visiting Maine. I plan to drive up US-1 from Freeport to Acadia National Park. I'm looking for some really great photo ops because this will be the only opportunity to visit Maine. I will have only 3 days in August to do this, so I really need some help trying to arrange an itinerary. I especially want to get some bird shots and sunsets with lighthouses. Any suggestions also for favorite motels to stay in?
All help will be sincerely appreciated.

Owls Head Lighthouse. Port Clyde lighthouse. Catallic Mountain Bar Harbor.
There are so many places to photograph and visit. Make a list of what has been posted and plot them on Google Map them Then make an itinerary and follow it
Me I like the Lubec Area and Campobello Island, NB less tourists Also you need your passport
You may want to drive to the boarder of Canada, and look at the "Flower Pots" and walk on the ocean floor when the tide is out, and watch it rush in. The flower pots a vertical pillars of rock that run from the sea floor to where the surface during high tide, with flowers and even trees and bushes growing on the top.

About 45 minutes east of the entrance to Acadia on Mount Desert Island - Schoodic peninsula (technically a part of the Acadia park but located on the mainland). Fewer tourists and a much more rustic area. If you are looking for the bigger crashing waves, its Schoodic you want. PM me if you would like an idea of how the location looks. the trip there also goes through a couple of small towns that have some interesting views.
Take a walk down the water line at Bar Harbor and be sure to be there for a sunset and blue hour. Howie Motenko does photo tours that are extremely worthwhile and pretty reasonable. He is a pro and knows his stuff.

Stay at the Wonderview Inn in Bar Harbor, reserve now and ask for a room with a view! Not elegant though. Their restaurant is wonderful and delicious with wonderviews of Bar Harbor, the Harbor islands, etc. Great breakfast. 3 days isn't enough to do Maine justice. Also, if you up route one, you won't see as much of the coast as you'd like. The Maine coastline is longer than that of California and is comprised of fjord-like fingers. It's down some of those fingers that you find the lighthouses. The iconic Portland Head Light is a must see as is Pemaquid Point lighthouse. Be aware, there is often fog in the morning. Booth Bay Harbor is near the Pemaquid light. Kennebunkport and the coastal drive is worth doing if you have the time.
Beware! Don't go without knowing in advance where you're going to spend the night. Everyone loves Maine in the summer and reservations are hard to get--unless you want to go camping. When my husband and I lived in Connecticut and made a trip to Maine, we liked it so much that we wanted to stay another day. BUT our place was fully booked and it was impossible to find another place. We headed South toward home, stopped at many places along the way and there was not a room to be had! So after an hour or two of looking, we decided to just go home! I'll be there for a family reunion on July 4th, but I made my reservation in February. -- Jackie
Suggest you purchase the book ($24.95) "Photographing Acadia National Park, The Essential Guide to When, Where, and How" by Colleen Miniuk-Sperry (three-time Acadia National Park Artist-in Residence)

I agree. Another to consider is "The Photographer's Guide to the Maine Coast -- Where to Find Perfect Shots and How to Take Them" by David Middleton and Bruce Morrison.

True!
I make our cottage reservation for October on January 2 each year.
(And that's five miles NW of Bar Harbor.)
