We ditched everything over a year ago and got an antenna. We got tired of deteriorating servie and increased prices. We have a smart TV and added Netflix and have SlingTV. The only thing we miss is the Tennis Channel, but ESPN has most of the majors so we’re able to watch them. Our monthly bill comes to around $35.

There are some fantastic videos on YouTube regarding cutting table and the different options you have using your antenna, Tivo’s HD Homerun etc.

WE had direct for a long time, local cable before that, when we switched from cable to Direct the picture and choice and deal were all much better, got tired of the black outs in storms, extended black outs when snow accumulated on the dish, the deal got worse, switched to FIOS, overall not happy, EXPENSIVE, slow internet, they want more $$ to speed it up, not so happy with channel selection, when contract is up will try Spectrum, have that at the summer cabin, better overall, less expensive, faster internet, Bob.

When you cancel Fios, after it is cancelled they will make offers to you like crazy to get you back. Before you cancel try talking to a supervisor and see if they will upgrade you for their current promo price.

Had Dish in Oregon for several years, never ever had a problem. Now in SC and we have Direct. Hate it! Everytime a cloud goes over we lose service! No problem wondering when it will rain!

Direct TV vs Dish!

Cheers,

Had direct and was not happy. Dish let’s you choose smaller packages to get what you want, lots of free channel previews, hopper and joeys with tons of storage and they have not raised my prices. People are cancelling dish and direct, going with other options. Good luck.

True. Like banks, cable companies spend a fortune hiring companies to find ways to get more money out of us. It's very easy to add to a service, but almost impossible to drop what we don't want. Very often, eliminating something will raise the monthly bill. Speaking of the monthly bill, it will continue to rise.

Do you have Direct or Dish???

I have used both and currently have Direct TV. I get good service and use their remote wireless service to put service in rooms not easy to get wire to. I liked it better before AT&T but still they are fine.

I have FiOS. Recently, the bill went up about $20/month. Not happy with that. I called and had a chat with them and when we finished, my bill became $20 less than the previous one. Total savings: $40/month. I also have phone and internet with them.

I used to have Dish, and now I have DirecTV. I have never liked Direct, and I wish I had Dish back--I simply think Direct is awkward. A couple of our new TV’s are Roku-equipped, and all of our TV’s have an antenna option for when the signal goes out. When my contract is up, I’m getting rid of Direct and using the Roku options--just about everything I ever watch and much more is available on it. I’m not going to use Direct or Dish. Most of the Roku stuff is free, and the premiums are pick and choose rather than packaged.

I pay around $150 a year here in UK for the BBC.
For this licence fee I get 5 quality channels, huge range of radio stations and access to 100+ TV channels through 'Freeview'.
I could pay over $80 a month to get SKY - but I've other things to do with my time and money!

To kinda explain why I posted the Link earlier:

I have never subscribed to cable/satellite television so I am not really a "cord cutter." However, I have built an extensive system for television. I started about fifteen years ago when I built a HTCP (Home Theater Personal Computer) based around SageTV -- which, BTW, is still to this day the backbone of the system. Of course, I am fortunate to live in an area of great OTA television -- over 80 channels.

This system includes:

Vizio 65" television (will be replaced when the P Quantum 65" is released in June/July) (well, there are 3 other tvs but who's counting)
Windows Vista computer
Yamaha RX-V673 receiver -- setup as 7.1 speaker system (Will be replace with a RX-3080 when released in June/July)
SageTV v9.0 -- HD300
8 - HDHomeRun Tuners
3 - ROKU units (I-1Ultra, 2-Express)
nVidia Shield
PLEX
PlayOn

My subscriptions are:

DirecTV Now (DTVN)- $5.00 month ($10 minus $5 bundle credit) -- this was special pricing from when they first started the service,
HBO - free,
Showtime - $8.00 month,
Netflix - $11.39 month,
Hulu - $5.99 month,
Amazon Prime - Hard to say what the cost is because it is mostly because of the free shipping,
and, of course, the AT&T unlimited Internet service.

These subscriptions work out well for us because we travel quite extensively and simply connect all of the above, over the internet, to our RV.

Dish has treated us very well for about four years. The price hasn't changed since we signed up. Like everyone else they offer dozens of channels that no one at my house wants to watch, but one plus for us is the SEC college football channels. Wonderful for those games with smaller schools that are so unimportant that none of the networks wants to carry them. "Prime Time on Demand" is great too; automatically recording all of the network programs for viewing later that day. Also, the included VCR is quite useful and capacious

I've had them all over the years and in my experiences there have been good and not-so-good with all of them. What maddens me the most was when I went to cancel they would offer me a better deal to stay. Why wouldn't they give that to me all along? I now have Spectrum cable which gives me the best high-speed internet available. I bundle the cable TV, Internet and phone however they are very proud of their monthly price.

I agree with the others that ask why we can't pick and choose the channels we want when most folks tend to watch very few of the 500 channels available.

Direct TV vs Dish!

Cheers,

I've had both in an area where there were no other choices. Had DirecTV first and it was OK, but the price started climbing and I was paying for umpteen stations I had no interest in just to get the ones I wanted. Next we got DISH with the introductory price for one year. Reception, even in wicked snow storms was very good, but again they started going up and up on their price. They did have a better system regarding having 2 or 3 more TVs in the house and downloading and saving shows to watch later. I also found that their visual channel selection was much easier on the eyes and less confusing than DirectTV and the Verizon FIOS that I have now. They've really got you when you are in an area where internet service is not reliable and where an antenna is nearly useless. We are forced into socialized television by paying for fringe channels that cater to small factions and could not stand on their own. Of the 250+ channels I have along with music channels, I probably utilize maybe 10 channels.
