Life after Picasa

I've been using Picasa for 10+years. I've taken it for granted and am dependent on it. Since Google discontinued updates and support for it a couple of years ago, it's just a matter of time before it stops working. I use it for organizing, cropping and a few other adjustments plus emailing and uploading to web sites. It's so easy; transfer pics to computer, import and there's a new folder, ready for playing with. I'm not particularly computer-savvy and other applications would be more difficult. A few years ago I was given a copy of Photoshop Elements and couldn't get the hang of it.

So I dread its inevitable demise. How am I gonna organize, crop, etc? Do you know of any user-friendly apps that will do what Picasa does?

The replacement is, I think, Google Photos. I haven't tried it but I can't imagine they made it too hard. Here's a suggestion. Find a local computer guy and have him/her sit down with you, and get your computer updated with Google Photos, PS Elements, or, the one I'm using, and love, Luminar 2018. Have the guy take an hour and get you familiar with the new program. It might cost a few bucks but you should be happy. That's what I plan to do to learn video editing.

What computer are you using. If it is an Apple, it has a great way to organize and do a few extra adjustments in I-photo. If you have microsoft, well, I am not sure.

Photo Editor by Axiem Systems - I use it on my iPad and it is very similar and less “cluttered” than Picasa. The app is free, but I upgraded to Photo Editor + for 99 cents with many more features. On my iPad it is very easy to use and straight forward. They offer a free download for pc’s, but I imagine the + version costs something. I like it on my iPad because it automatically does not touch the original and just saves the edit as a new photo. The + (iPad) version adds collages, more editing features and the ability to take a photo in the app.

I use a PC with Windows 10. I use Google Photos to upload to so others can view the pics. If it can crop, email and edit images, that has escaped me. Unfortunately, it is less intuitive and user-friendly than what it replaced, Picasa Web Albums, which was discontinued. I will happily take a look at Luminar and Photo Editor.

I switched from Picasa a year ago for the same reason. I ended up using a free software - Faststone, and found it just as easy to use with similar functions. I suggest you try it. There are two differences that I found:
1. Picasa requires you to import your photos and directories, Faststone doesn't. I actually find it better this way but you need to organize your photos using Windows folders.
2. Picasa can give me shutter counts for my Nikon cameras. Faststone cannot. For this reason I keep Picasa just to display shutter counts.

I use the operating system to create and fill folders.

I use gimp to crop, adjust levels, etc.

How do you use Picassa to display shutter count?

This works for all my Nikons (D7000, D750, J5). Once a photo is displayed in Picasa, the right panel contains picture properties (EXIF). Scroll all the way down, one of the last entries is the shutter count.

I too am a long time picasa user. Just to be clear - it's not about web albums or IOS viewing, it's about workflow.

1) import from SD card to "Date taken" folder automatically deleting photos from the SD card after importing
2) Folder view of all photos including JPG, DNG (Pentax Raw), PSD
3) Editing (not PS level but useful) or "open with" in any other photo editor - i.e. open file in Photoshop
4) Face recognition and cataloging.
5) adding captions to photos
6) Any computer on your home network can access shared photos by creating a local catalog.

So the OP's question, I believe is what do we do when Picasa stops working due to inevitable Windows changes.

I am looking at ACDsee 2.0 which may have similar capabilities. Some here have suggested using Lightroom for its cataloging capabilities.

And now I'm looking forward to reading other suggestions .

Previously I used Picasa 3 too, now I only use it to download my files to assure uniformity. Now I use PhotoScapeX and it works very well for me. It can be used accurately with 3 or 4 clicks or you can REALLY get into serious editing. Here are a couple of sites for you, Enjoy. Be sure to select Mac/or Windows. Get the free version first (it never expires), and you can always upgrade. Also, please do yourself a favor and watch the following youtube video both to see if you would be interested and for training if you are interested. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWC-SAuYOzw&t=325s Instruction and download info http://x.photoscape.org/.

I still use it, and will as long as my computer has an op system that still lets it run.

However, I also use the photo editing software that comes with my cameras. If yours is a Canon (and this likely works for Nikon and others) go to their website, the support section. You should be able to download the software. I use EOS Utility to load from camera to PC, and the older Zoombrowser or DPP (Digital Photo Professional) for editing. Also, DPP can convert later RAW files.
