I would recommend an ibridge dongle over the Apple one. A different app would be needed, but far more file types are supported, meaning a smaller chance of things going wrong. You won't need to own the dongle, the client simply uses it to transfer from the micro SD card you would need to put the photos on.

I use a cable from my MacBook Pro to my IPad Pro. Not sure on othe systems.
You can also set it to sync wirelessly.
I suggest you save the jpegs in a Dropbox folder. Invite them to the folder. They can download the photos to their iPad.
RE: The Apple ipad to SD card reader. Be aware that it is a reader only. You can copy your photos from the SD card to the ipad, but you cannot copy from the ipad to the SD card. At least I haven't found a way to do it. If anyone has this device and has found a way to copy from the ipad to the SD card, please post how it is done, it's like the SD card is locked in read only mode.
I use iEasy drive. Has USB connector on one side and lightning connector on the other. Plug into camera or computer, upload to flash drive, flip around an plug into iPad and download to it.
Do they expect you to actually put the photos on their IPAD? I would ask them in what format they needed to receive them (memory stick, memory card, drip box, e-mail etc.) and let the client make that decision. They know their IPAD better than any of us!

There is a slightly different version for older iPads. This is the method I use for transfer and it always works well. Much faster than WiFi in my case.
Without buying anything if you have a Mac use Airdrop. Or just load the images to dropbox or google drive or pixieset or pass to name just a few and have the client download them. I do it all the time with clients.
I think getting the images to them in small, digital format is your job. Getting them onto his I-pad is his job, not yours.

For the amount of events I've done I thought this was a simple answer. After all, figuring out photo problems is part of our job! Here's something I've never come across concerning an Ipad.
Besides all the other photos and pictures in a wedding, the client wants copies for use on their iPhone also. Mind you those will be only the ones that have been accepted, not everything, and also in "simple" jpeg form. My question to those here is, what is a method to get the photos on an Ipad?
Normally in that case, I would just put them on a memory card for them to transfer. Now I find out the Ipad doesn't have memory card slot, or maybe it does somewhere but I don't have time to find out as the wedding is to take place in a week. Afterwards I'll have time to do a direct transfer if that will work.
I have never touched an Ipad before so I'm open to your suggestions. How would I put images directly on an Ipad?

iPad and iPhone owners should do it for you. Give them a USB3 flashdrive, or CD, or DVD. They’ll put it in a computer, plug the iDevice into the computer, and use iTunes or other software to transfer files.
Alternatively, set up a DropBox account and put the images there, so anyone can download them when sent an invitation from you.
Size files to at least 1024 pixels on the long side.
Message the photos to them on social media.

The absolute fastest and most simple way is to use PhotoSync. You load this app on both your iPad and iMac. Then select which photos you want to transfer and press the button and let 'er rip. Very short learning curve of about 2 mins.

I have two of these (always loosing one or the other...). It works well on the iPad or iPhone. It is a card reader that plugs directly into the iPad or iPhone.
I use this - the Ipad dongle - all the time and it works very well.
