I know it is hard to get small active subjects to hold still. This will not work with all insects. That said, you will see why. Any container may work, but smaller is better.you need a plastic bottle with lid ,some plastic tubing and twine or Velcro strap. Mix a pint or so of beer with a cup of sugar. Put in a bowl to suit. Let it sit out uncovered a few days, stirring 2 or ,3 times a day. This will make one bottle. One bottle of one pint. Next follow the sketches that follow. I would make maybe four. As it ferments, gas will make it drip. Start with liquid level and end of tube level. Do not go below or siphon action, a no. Add to liquid as fermentation slows. Sorry to be long winded, and please excuse the sketches, I did not have a six or seven year old handy, so I did them myself. Hope this works for you.p.s. this will work better after one or two days. Set these up ,then make rounds. Insects will be sated, slow. Move tube out or range and shoot. Enjoy!!
I have a vision of lot of tipsy bees having a party. Thanks for the suggestion.

LOL, that would be fun to watch, and shoot...........
This is a good way to attract all kiinds of insects.
Thirty four families in Maryland of just beetles .Plus flies, moths butterflies, wasps, bees, true bugs, ants, oportunistic predators, hummingbirds, and, people wondering WTH ( my initials) is this . The many layers of the onion. These from my notes.
This is interesting! I had heard of a similar concoction where the bait is in a trap, so the attracted insects are tricked into going into a container, and they drown. But of course I like this much better. Also it should be said that this sort of bait attracts some unusual insects.
Now, I am not clear on some details here so I have some questions.
1. When initially set up, the liquid level is equal the end of the tube, so it is barely touching it? But as it ferments the liquid rises and starts to slowly siphon out? Is that right?
2. In the second drawing, you have the bottle strapped to a tree? And the tube is wrapped to hang down the back side of the tree, and the bait drips down the trunk. Is that right?
Mark, correct on both counts, except, the liquid will be forced out by fermentation. If siphon effect happens, all liquid above nozzle will be voided.

I see. By 'siphon' you mean that if the outside end of the tube is lower than the inside end, then the liquid will continue to be drawn out until the liquid level drops below the end of the tube. I did not see that issue until just now.
Eureka, qed and all that Latin stuff.
