Obviously the best Nikkor lens ever was their amazing 6MM fisheye with a 220 degree angle of view - it sees behind the camera! Quite the piece of glass with which to impress your friends and the ladies!

Too bad they're not making it any longer...

My two favorites are my AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f1:2.8G ED, and my old Nikkor 50mm f1:1.4 Ais

As a former photojournalist (1972 to 1982) the best lenses in my bag were 28mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8 and a 80-200 push-pull zoom used on an Photomic F and an ancient non-metered Nikkormat with a potato masher flash. The 2 lenses that rarely left my camera were the 28mm and the 85mm as they gave the views for the subject matter my editors expected, i.e. close-ups with lots of depth of field and lots of detail in the background, and "head-shots" with good modeling. The zoom was used for all of the sports that I covered with and without the flash. I started with small-town newspaper and moved on up to the regional papers but the editors that I worked with considered photographers as a necessary evil and did not want the photos to overshadow the text.

If you are looking for image quality or sharpness look at the 105mm F/1.4, 200mm Micro F/4, or the 200mm F/2

The best is what you could be using right now. In general, the best and sharpest lens will not always render sharp subjects. Sharpness is something where the photographer plays a bigger role than the lens.
Nikon has manufactured excellent optics over the years. If what you are looking for and you did not say a word about what type of lens you want or what do you want it to do, is a 50mm lens any of the lenses in that focal length made by Nikon can do an excellent job. I do very well with a 50mm f1.4 S, single coated lens of the early 70's. I like the 50mm f1.8 but I had this one and I had it converted to AI to use it with my digital cameras.
Their 35mm f1.8 has excellent quality. Their 70-210 f4-5.6 D is very nice and the 105mm f2.5 is a legendary short tele that has been a fantastic lens for portraits.
Buy what you need, old or new and just remember that if you do your part the lens will not disappoint you.

The one you use the most and serves you good is the best!

No, no, no! The one that impresses the most people is obviously the best, and what better than a rare awesome lens that costs in the 6 figures?

Use your cell phone to take pictures - cameras are the new jewelry (just walk into any Leica store).

By default, the best lens is always the one you have with you. Or conversely, it is the one you should have brought.

I don't use cell phone camera and I don't own one, I use a simple flip phone only! A lens that costs in 6 figures is not necessary your best lens, if you don't use it!

Hard to say but the 100mm original Nikkor has always been very highly regarded and the old 50mm micro Nikkor also has a stellar reputation

105mm f/2.5 should be on the list. An old manual lens. I think it was used to take the famous Afghan girl portrait.

While I probably used my 28/2.8 for more images, IMO the 105/2.5 is the finest lens Nikon has ever made and superior to almost any other 35mm lens from any brand.

If I were you, I would go to the Ken Rockwell site and look around at Nikon stuff - somewhere on his site he will tell you what he thinks are the BEST - he is a LONG time respected Nikon guru......

As for me, I can HIGHLY recommend the 300mm f4.5 ED IF especially on a Sony - and with the recent reviews I have seen for the 55 2.8 and 3.5 micro AIS - I could also recommend them.
