Hi all! Looking for suggestions on a lightweight point and shoot camera for an upcoming month long backpacking trip. I have a Nikon D7000 that I typically use for landscape photography, but don't want to carry the extra weight with lenses, etc. nor do I want to damage my nice camera. Does anyone have experience with the Canon Powershot SX530 HS? At about $250, I won't have to worry if it gets dropped over the side of a mountain or gets soaked in a deluge. It will be used primarily for landscape shots (obviously) and maybe some wildlife if I'm lucky. If you have other suggestions in the same price range, I would love to hear them. Also, some photo samples from some of these less expensive point and shoot cameras would be awesome! Thanks in advance for your time.

Batteries? Charger? One month long? Maybe consider a light, mechanical, film camera?

Forget the film camara.i bought a Nikon coolpix L330.the led does not do it any justice, but it takes some pretty damn good pics.once you download your pics, you will see some fantastic pics.its a little slow but landscape does not move.i paid around $99 for it a few years ago.i loned it to my 8 year old grandson while in Minneapolis last summer.out of 165 pics 145 came out perfect.good luck.

I have a Canon PowerShot G9 X as a second camera for exactly this purpose--currently available for $379. It has a one-inch sensor, and the image quality is really good. I love the touch screen function--the camera is very easy to use. It does not have a great zoom reach at the long end (28-84 mm full frame equivalent), but it is perfect for landscape photography, as well as for street photography. It is very small and lightweight--it easily fits into my jeans pockets. It is so small that you can carry it with you anytime. There is a newer model as well (Mark II) which is a bit more expensive.

Here are some sample landscape shots I took with this camera:

Here we go, again..... So, what is a "point and shoot camera"?

Edit: My bad. I guess you really did define "point and shoot" by asking about the Canon Powershot SX530 HS, and limiting choices to $250.

I picked the Nikon A900. It takes excellent 20mp pictures, good zoom, fits in my pocket.
I wish they did the "flip" screen better, but it works really well upside down for overhead shots.

I've been using the Olympus TG-4 for a few years and really like it. It's very rugged and you can use it underwater.

Since then they have released a newer TG-5.

Go for the refurb..

I use this camera for work when doing exterior site work. Rain and accidental drops are not an issue.

I recently purchased an Olympus Tough TG-5 with the dive housing. It’s waterproof without the housing which is used for deeper dives and is very compact. It makes impressive images, has a good zoom range, and has many of the menu operations of my OM-D E-M1 II. I highly recommend this camera.

The current Consumer Magazine did a spread on point and shoot. It is a good place to compare prices and features.

I have been using one of those cameras as a backup for 4 or 5 years. I am in the field a good amount of time as a biologist and it has done me well. It has been carried around in my back pack, dropped, and fallen on. Kind of dinged up but keeps working. Zoom is pretty good for wildlife and I just posted some landscape photos from the Superstition Mountains yesterday that were taken with it. For the price, a good little point and shoot.

Forgive me but I just had to comment on your posting. You are very fortunate to be in a position where dropping a $250 camera off a mountain is meaningless. I can’t help but think of all the people to whom $250 is a whole lotta money.
