Lightroom Doesn't Automatically Match Lens Profile on Import

Good morning!

Whenever I import files into Lightroom, I have it set to apply Lens Correction, and this has worked correctly for all my Nikkor and Tamron lenses over the years.

I recently bought the Tokina 11-16 f/2 DX II for Nikon and noticed that when I view the raw images in the Develop mode, the Lens Profile is set to "None." (Attachment #1) When I select "Tokina" as the Make, LR instantly selects the correct lens. (Attachment #2) This is an "officially" supported lens, and it's in the list once I specify Tokina; it just doesn't seem to match the profile to the imported images automatically.

So a few questions for the group:

1. Has anyone else experienced the same problem with this lens or with another supported lens?

2. Are there any settings I need to adjust to correct this?

3. If not, is there a way to "force" LR to use the correct Tokina profile when it sees the information it has for the lens in the EXIF data on import?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Lightroom doesn't automatically recognize my Nikkor 70-300mm telephoto lens but it does have it in the "available" parameters. Part of this (I suspect) is because the lens is an older lens that doesn't have any "reporting" process or intelligent feed back for the lens. My lightroom does have 3 or 4 versions of the 70-300 Nikkor but allows me to select the correct one. My 18-70 DX, my Tamron 10-24mm, Nikkor 50mm 1.2 and my Nikkor 80-400mm all are automatically input. I'm not sure what the issue is, but it isn't a big deal because I know what lens I used and can easily put it in.

I have experienced this, too, and it's totally random for both camera and lens. Sometimes I'll see the box is checked, but other times I have to check it myself. I've never bothered to make a custom setting for a lens that wasn't recognized.

It happens for me, but it is easy to choose the correct profile

It's my understanding that Adobe lens profiles are camera specific. Example a Nikon D5300 will have different profiles than a Nikon D7100, with many not all lenses supported on both cameras. Although your Tokina is supported on some cameras, it's not supported in a profile for your camera. When you go to the Profile Corrections Tab, and select Tokina, you are telling Lightroom to ignore the camera specific profiles and just use one for that lens. My understanding to get it to auto select you either need to create, or find a lens profile for that lens on your camera. To create a profile, you can download the Adobe Lens Profile Creator here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/digital-negative.html#Adobe_Lens_Profile_Creator

I am not sure about this - I will have to test it. But if you create an import preset that has both remove aberrations and use lens profiles I think it will apply the profile on import, but only if every file in the import was taken with the same lens.

It is much easier to import your images, go to the grid view in Library, drop the metadata section down from the top, and select the images you just imported, filtered by lens (and camera if using multiple bodies), pick one image in the selection and apply the lens profile correction - then sync the entire filtered set. It's a couple of more steps. This is what I have done pretty much since I started using LR.

Worked fine with Nikon and Sigma product, not automatic with Tamron and Sony and Fuji have built in Profiles that transfer with the RAW files.
