Welcome! I was stationed at Ellsworth back in the 60's. My wife and I love the Black Hills area, and will be visiting the area in a couple weeks. Got a new lens, and am hoping for some great photo opportunities this year!

Welcome to the site. That is a beautiful area. I was stationed at Ellsworth in 1967. The 52’s were deployed to Guam. Loved the Black Hills.

It is true that the Bluebird is soft but the fence is spot on so to me it gives a that sense of movement. The only other thing that would have made it nicer is to have the bluebird on the other side of the frame. But we take what we can get sometimes.

Thanks everyone. I was actually surprised this bluebird was even in the frame. I was a little late on the draw. If you look closer, the image is a little soft.

Welcome to the forum. Looking forward to your photo ops. My wife and I are coming to Rapid City on the 30th for six days. Our neighbor is from the area and has beguiled us with descriptions of the area. Can you arrange photo friendly weather???

Sorry Gene, I've been rained out three days in a row. Nevertheless, enjoy your visit to the Biack Hills.

Hi, KEN here. If this is your 1st time to the area, I suggest driving the "wildlife loop" road in Custer State Park. Plenty of wildlife and please take a 5lb bag of carrots for the burro's. They're pretty tame.... Lots of buffalo and newborns as well.

Sorry to report but Custer State Park experienced a major fire last December that destroyed 84 square miles of grassland and trees. The park is now experiencing an incredible resurgence of green grass but logging operations are still ongoing. Unfortunately several of the donkeys suffered burns and had to be uthanized. The rest were removed and placed into veterinary care. The donkeys only recently were returned to the park and 4 additional donkeys were donated to amend the herd. The buffalo simply stampeded to higher unburned ground and tore down fences. Unknown as to how the elk and antelope fared. The park is quickly recovering but it will be years before the last vestiges of this fire are gone.

Thanks for the update. I was there last May and noticed all the pine bark beetle tree damage. Looked like there had been a fire as well. But your news is new to me......
