If I were doing a lot of flash shooting, I'd look for a Nikon flash. They cost more, but you know it will work perfectly with a Nikon body. Nikon is known for its lighting systems. Consider size, weight, and cost. They can get pretty big (and heavy). My SB-600 ($195 in 2008) is a good size with good power.

EDIT: Looking online, I take back what I said. The SB-400 ($150) is small and lacks power. I bought one and sold it immediately. The next step up is over $300! Look at Yongnuo or Nissin.

Based on K. Rockwell recommendation, I bought a used SB400. Excellent for any walkaround usage, light fill application. Well built and efficient use of power. Easily a 9 on a scale of 10 for most applications.

As per prior suggestions on HH I have gone with Godoy and couldn’t be happier. Works as well as my ancient SB800

I prefer the Altura brand. I have 3 of them.

First I bought a Neewer TTL NW561 for my Nikon D5300, but as it was too much of a manual flash for my liking I bought a second one, a NEEWER iTTL, a NW982II. The little “i” in iTTL makes all the difference. This flash is controlled by the settings in the camera. And it zooms with the camera as well.

I paid ~$40 each for them, on eBay.

If you buy online - make sure you have 4 electrical connectors on the flash shoe NOT ONLY ONE.

If you decide to go with Neewer, check ebay, the prices should be better than Amazon.

I don't do much flash work, but I use this unit which compares well with other units and has a good price. It comes in a Nikon and a Canon flavor. I would recommend it.

I've used 3 Yongnuo 560's for the last 5 years. Very satisfied with their quality and light. They seem to be bulletproof too :)

An observation I would make is related to user friendly. I have an SB600 that I use infrequently and have to dig into the manual a bit for a refresher on how to get around on its settings options. I have read that the SB700 has a more intuitive settings system. Plus it has greater range. But my needs are limited. You might want to look for YouTube videos for guidance, most are poor but some are pretty good.

Photoolex M800N 1/8000s Flash Speedlite i-TTL / TTL Speedlight for Nikon / Canon

I bought this on sale for $80 at amazon and love it. It works with Nikon and Conon and works with the Nikon CLS (creative light system) . It is very much like the sb-810 Nikon . It is a commander or a remote. So far no problems.

Godox. The menu does not require you to read Mandarin.
Get them from B&H or marketed as Flashpoint from Adorama.
They are the same thing.
They make the most extensive system on the market. Look at their Site HERE
Also have a Li-Ion powered unit that will give you 650 full-power flashes. -HERE.
Built-in radio transceivers for off camera use.
I use Nikon at work and they are great....but not inexpensive.
Been happy with my Godox stuff for my own stuff.
I also have the AD 200: three times the power as a speedlight in a package only slightly bigger.
Has its own FB page following.

Agree. Godox is a very nice ttl flash, guide# 197, only $110!
