First LR imports from Canon 6D Mk II

I imported photos from my new Canon 6D Mk II to my Windows Pictures folder. There seem to be images in the Pictures folder but Window says it can't open them. The names are like this: IMG_0020.CR2.

I tried to import the pics to Lightroom and got a "Preview unavailable" message on all the photo boxes. Any ideas?
Thanks.

This happened to me. Lightroom doesn't recognize the mk2 raw files. My first fix was to download the free canon DNG converter, convert them to DNG and then import them. It works but is an extra step. I finally updated to the newest version of Lightroom 7 (no charge) and the problem disappeared. The program was too old to recognize the newest cameras.

Oh, that probably explains it. I am away from home and using my laptop with an older version of LR. Thanks for that.

You can view XXX.cr2 (RAW files) in Adobe Bridge.

You should import the pictures via Lightroom, not windows. Lightroom imports them to your computer's file system and then knows where they are.

This chart will tell you that you need Lightroom 6.12 (or later) or a subscription to Lightroom Classic CC. A fresh, updated Adobe DNG Converter is a work around that is free for older Lightroom versions.

Regarding Windows itself, Microsoft seems to have abandon trying to make RAW files viewable in Explorer. There is a "plug-in" frequently recommended on UHH but I forget what it is called.

Correct, however is this case, Lightroom is not recognizing the files because it's an older version predating the camera.

The last and final version of the perpetual should be 6.14.

I would recommend 6.14 it's the final and I know it worked for me. Please let us know if 6.12 solves the problem.

The .CR2 is a Canon designation for Camera RAW. You can open them with the Canon Software that came with your camera, or open with a digital negative software.
