Best GPS add-on for Nikon

Most of my heavy photography efforts are while traveling. The Geotagging feature seems like something that I might value as I look back at photos going forward.

I'd like to purchase an add-on GPS to my Nikon cameras before a summer trip to Alaska. I would appreciate recommendations. The Nikon GP-1A is the most expensive and has a 3.5 star rating. The Wolverine GEO-35 is less but has a significant cord that seems like it would be a cumbersome problem and is 3 star out of 5. The Aokatec products look interesting with both physically connected and Blue-Tooth units.

Thanks

I've been using one of these for the last 8 or so years.

Not all GPS units are comparable with all cameras, be sure to check for compatibility. Here are a couple of the brands to consider: Promote, Solmeta.

I have used the Nikon GP-1A, Precision Design GP-1 (several companies put their name on this design) and the Aokatec on my D800. The Aokatec is the best. Not only does it eliminate the need for a cord, but it acquires more satellites faster than the others. The only downside is that it blocks access to the flash button on the D800 and screwing it on and off is difficult because there is little room to get your fingers in between the camera and the Aokatec. As a result, I keep it on my camera all the time. That is not a problem because it has an on/off switch. The best external GPS is the one made by and for Canon, but it is not compatible with Nikon.

The last time we did an Alaska cruise I had a Precision Design GP-1 and found that it was useless. Although it works (it is slow in acquiring signals) in Southern California, there were only a few places in Alaska where it could acquire satellite signals. My suspicion is that was because the unit's receiver lacked sensitivity and selectivity or because there may be poorer satellite coverage in Alaska. Based on that experience, I have no idea how any other brand would perform in Alaska.

I have used the GP-1 and GP-1A for over 20 years and it has never failed. Does not seem to affect battery, but then again I don't stroll around with the camera on, but asleep. I tried the Solmeta but the need to charge separately was a pain. remember to keep it simple.
