It is hard. Sorry for your loss. I sometimes get nostalgic thinking about the different personalities of dogs I have had. And my first Golden loved mud! He would roll in it or get down and wallow in it. But then he would go swimming, even in ice-cold water.
Consider visiting the local retriever rescue organization. We have gotten our last two dogs from the Golden Retriever Rescue of Central Florida. When we got them they were already housebroken and mature, but as retrievers, they are ultimately adaptable. You can adopt an older dog - and just realize that this is only for a few years, but you can make sure that good old dog has a good few years...
He will cross the rainbow bridge to meet you when it is your turn many, many years from now

So sorry for your loss. I miss my Mackie every day even though we have two rescues at this time.
so very sorry for your loss. it doesnt get any easier.
Thank you everyone for your kind words and sympathy. It means a lot to hear your thoughts and feelings.
Loosing a pet is horrible...but we have to look back and see how much joy they gave us. I feel for you.
I'm afraid I am going to saying goodbye to Harold, my cat of many years. Diagnosed with cancer. What will I do?
You have my sympathy as I have been down that road too many times.
That is always difficult. Similar situation is approaching here, too.

Having pets has been an extrordinary delightful experience over the years, but it keeps getting harder to say goodbye with the passing of each one. My friend, Pantera, just moved on to the great hiking trail in the sky and he'll be truly missed.

Sorry for your loss. Saying goodbye is so hard, especially on my wife, after thirteen goodbyes we are childless. We do miss having a pet but do not want to have to say goodbye again.

Sorry for your loss. They are family members and the loss is always hard.
We've lost two within the last year.
Thank you again for the support. They say there's strength in numbers and every one of you has shared similar experiences which helps ease the pain of another family member gone.
