I just bought a 5d mrk iv to upgrade from my 5d mrk ii. The batts from the 5d mrkii do not work on the mrk iv so my question is what after market battery can I buy that is compatible with the mrk iv. Also what cf card aand sd card is everyone useing. Going to be useing it mainly for photography but want to start useing the video clips along with photos to compliment the photos.

My two cameras (and the last two before I traded) use the same battery so I have 8 Wasabi Power (I use battery grips) and 4 Canon OEM that came with the cameras. (6D & 7DII, now 5DIV and 80D). If three sets of batteries won't get me through a day I need to stop, smell the roses and read a book.
Memory cards, my CF and SD are 32 GB SanDisk Extreme Pro with some older and smaller ones for backup if I go through those while out. I have considered going to 64 GB but will wait until they are on sale since I have more than enough of the smaller sizes.

You do not have battery compatibility issues -----
Your camera came with a LP-E6n battery -- Your 5d2 came with LP-6 --- BOTH batteries will fit & work quite well with your Mk 4 -- With my 5ds I use both batteries --- for shot cards I use Cf = SanDisk 64gb/120mb/s & Sd = SunDisk 64gb/98mb/s

Batteries from the Mk II will most definitely work in the newer Mk IV, but they will not like doing so. They might send you error messages or run out of power sooner than expected, but they do work. If you stop to think about this you will realize the Mk IV is a power hog compared to the Mk II. The AF system utilizes it's own computer which uses power. The touch screen on the Mk IV uses lots of power. The Mk II is a power miser by comparisons. Most of the adjustments made on the rear LCD of the Mk IV are done on the top LCD of the Mk II, a feature that uses far less power. Try this, open the manual for the Mk IV and start reading the nomenclature section. Look at every button and ask yourself if the system using that button is using power and how much. You will quickly realize how efficient the Mk II is. I carry a Mk II in my car. I looked at the battery charge this morning and found it to be full, and it's been that way since Thanksgiving. My Mk IV goes through 2 batteries a day just shooting birds out the window. That body with large lens eats batteries whole. I am just greatful that I am able to use the Mk II batteries at all in the Mk IV. They can still be used for back up. The card situation in the Mk IV is sort of funky, to me. I dislike SD cards and got one 64gb card for it. I use this card solely for backing up the RAW files on the CF card. It never comes out of it's slot. Best of luck to you and the new Mk IV, it is one great experience. Wait until you see it work at ISO 12,8000!

I have a Canon 5D MIII & 7D MII. I may be foolish, but I only use Canon batteries. After spending $3200 for the 5D MIII and $1800 for the 7D MII (when purchased new) I don't feel saving $20 - 30 on an after market battery is worth the risk. I've had the three Canon batteries for 4+ years. Use them interchangeably with both cameras.

I don't use aftermarket batteries. Cards are SD=Lexar 64GB 1000X because it came with the camera and the CF is SanDisk 64 GB Extreme Pro160MB/s.

I have a mark 4 and use 3rd party battery and I may get a message asking if it has the canon name on it. I say no and keep on shooting. I also have a few canon battery and then may last a little longer.

The 5dii and 5div batteries are the same. That being said, can you describe what was going on that makes you think they were not? Were you getting an error message? Or was just "nothing " happening? I use canon, wasabi, and other batteries in my 5div,5dii,and 7dii...all interchangeably.

I think Canon is smart by using the same battery and cards in a lot of their bodies. This goes for lens mount as well.

I have a 5D Mark IV and use SD cards because my other two cameras use SD cards. It is just more convenient for me to only carry SD. I found a CF to SD adapter that works really well, so I have SD in both slots.

Years back I used non Canon Batteries and they worked fine but found the ones I had did not last as long. I discovered the did not have the same ratting as the Canon, no big deal.
BUT, you spent a lot oh money on the 5DIV spend a few more on the Canon batteries.

I didn't know that you can use two sd cards in the mark 4 instead of cf cards. do you need an adapter?

Yes, you need an adapter for the CF slot. I picked up a couple from Amazon. It is a Type 1 CF (Type 2 will not fit) to SD. I bought a couple of brands and one was slightly thicker than the other (could be the label was thicker). Both worked, but I am using the thinner one as it comes out easily.
I am packed for a trip or I would give you the brand. I may be able to give it to you tomorrow.

BTW, on Amazon, when I searched for CF to SD I was smothered in CF WiFi adapters. I had to page through them to find the CF to SD adapter.

this good to know. I have lots of cf cards but may have to use sd cards in the future.
