Hello, I have the Nikon D850 and would like to know how to reset the file naming to start at 0001 again instead of letting it go to 9999 and then it starts over. I would like to start it at the beginning of a big trip so it does not role over during the trip. It might be an easy answer but I can't see it, any help is appreciated! Thank you...

You can probably do that but I do not advise it. (I shoot with a C-camera so I can't tell you how.) With the photo numbers reset, it is possible to get two files with the same name. I lost a whole set of what were supposedly duplicate files that way.

You can reset the letters from DSC to something else like TRP or any three letters you want . . . That way even if it does roll over, all the pics will have the new prefix . . .

I have found the best way to keep unique file names is to preface the camera file name with the numeric date so the file name CR21576 becomes 2018-03-25-CR221576.
By the time the numeric in the camera roles around to 000001 again, the date will have changed. (Unless you put it on burst mode and hold the shutter button AND you have a very fast camera! )
If you use Lightroom, it can do that for you automatically. The date prefix will automatically tell you which photos were taken during your trip. As an additional organizational tool, I have Lightroom produce a folder for each date I shot photos. These dates are in a parent folder by month and the month folders are in year folders.
It makes it very easy to keep my photos organized and even when I am away on a trip, I use the same strategy with my laptop saving the photos on an external hard drive.
That makes it easy to merge my vacation photos with all my other photos. There are other organizational approaches but I have not found any that work as universally as this method. Of course I also tag my photos extensively with keywords so I can find them easily.

Have a great trip.

Have you looked in your manual under File Naming?
On my Df and my D7200 in the Shooting Menu under File Naming you can change the first three characters (usually DSC) to any 3 character alpha-numeric you choose.

Yes I am aware of that but if I change the first three characters does that start the numbering over? My issue is that I don't want the numbering to hit the 9999 during a trip and start the numbering at 0001.

I believe each time you change the prefix the numbering will start at 0001, but I can't say that for certain.

I would encourage establishing your own file naming convention that ensures each and every image has a unique filename. Relying on the camera to establish the filename means you'll get duplicate names every 10,000 pics.

I use Downloader Pro to get the image files from my camera card to my computer. That program allows me to change the file name to something meaningful. A file named DSC_4839 means nothing to me. "Suzie's Birthday 20180324 124503" tells me what the shot is and the date and time. If the camera's file name rolls over, who cares?

If you use Lightroom you can do basically the same thing.

I appreciate all the suggestions but nobody has answered my question...is it possible to restart the numbering sequence on the camera?

Thanks

Since nobody here, at least so far, has been able to give you a definitive answer, maybe you should consider asking Nikon.

From the manual.

d7: File Number Sequence
When a picture is taken, the camera names the file by adding one to the last file number used. This option controls whether file numbering continues from the last number used when a new folder is created, the memory card is formatted, or a new memory card is inserted in the camera.

On
When a new folder is created, the memory card formatted, or a new memory card inserted in the camera, file numbering continues from the last number used or from the largest file number in the current folder, whichever is higher. If a photograph is taken when the current folder contains a photograph numbered 9999, a new folder will be created automatically and file numbering will begin again from 0001.
Off
File numbering is reset to 0001 when a new folder is created, the memory card is formatted, or a new memory card is inserted in the camera. Note that a new folder is created automatically if a picture is taken when the current folder contains 5000 pictures.
Reset
As for On, except that the next picture taken is assigned a file number by adding one to the largest file number in the current folder. If the folder is empty, file numbering is reset to 0001.

File Number Sequence

If the current folder is numbered 999 and contains either 5000 pictures or a photograph numbered 9999, the shutter-release button will be disabled and no further pictures can be taken (in addition, movie recording may be disabled if the camera calculates that the number of files needed to record a movie of the maximum length would result in the folder containing over 5000 files or a file with a number over 9999). Choose Reset for Custom Setting d7 (File number sequence) and then either format the current memory card or insert a new memory card.

Thanks Bob, I read those settings and I think the answer to my question is NO, I cannot simply restart the numbering sequence. I would not want it to reset every time there is a new folder or I reformat a card or insert a new card.

Once my camera gets to 9999 photos it creates a new file (2nd folder) on the memory card and starts over with 0001 just FYI
