A couple of weeks ago I asked for suggestions on which new iMac I should buy. Made my decision, ordered online and picked it up at my local Apple store Sunday. Still setting it up, but so far, wow.
I got 21.5 inch Retina, love it. May desk wasn't really large enough for the 27 inch and the 21.5 is fine.
I have the 3.4 GHz Intel Core i5. Currently have only 8 gb memory, but the upgrade will be easy when I decide to get it. The new models now have an easy tray at the bottom of the screen that slides out to install the additional/change memory. So far with the processor, graphics card and 1TB fusion drive, it hums along.
The keyboard and mouse no longer need batteries; just plug them in to recharge.
So thanks for all the advice. Even got my education discount.
Enjoy - have the same set-up except have 27" Retina. Love the color, speed, etc.

If I'm not mistaken, that iMac Retina display has 5K resolution. It is an amazing machine for photo editing....and most everything else.
Apple may not produce the cheapest of technology products but the quality, especially their operating systems, of Apple’s offerings is very good. I moved across from Microsoft about ten years ago (thanks Dan) and have never looked back!

Apple really screwed the pooch when they removed the cable from the keyboard. Why the hell should we have to be continually recharging something that sits a couple of feet from the computer? And I use Apple products.

Amen to that. I got fed up and made the switch to Microsoft 8 years ago and went to Apple which was a great move. I hadn't fully learned my lesson though because I later bought a Microsoft Surface tablet and it turned out to be a piece of junk and cost me much more than an iPad would have. I have now been fully rehabbed and have an iPad.

Do you have the charging keyboard and mouse? I am guessing not, because I go weeks without having to charge and they charge very quickly. Also, if you just plug one or the other in overnight when you are not using it - you never have to worry about running out of battery. Not being encumbered by more cording is more than worth the "hassle" of having to plug in every so often.
I do not think you can add memory to a new 21.5 inch mac. The 27 inch has an opening in the back that allows you to easily add ram. The older 21 inch models had a screen at the bottom of the screen that you could remove and add memory. The newer versions of that models removed the screen and are not user upgradable. I would check the computer as soon as possible to determine if you can upgrade and if you need more ram.

Yes, it's clear that Bob knows nothing of what he's talking about. I go weeks just as you do and even then when I check the battery level, it is often still over 50%.

Me too! Plus, I shouldn’t admit, perhaps, that I am being tempted strongly by the Apple Watch!

Yeah, I would like an Apple watch too but then that is just one more thing that I will want to update in a couple of years so I'm resisting that move.

If it's the mid 2017 21.5" iMac the ram upgrade does not look easy at all

It has been precipitated by us traveling to England & France in two weeks time, me finding the Things app invaluable, that the app runs on the Watch/iPhone, and me finally giving in to buying an iPhone. Aided and abetted by our local US Cellular office in Grants Pass giving me a very good offer on an iPhone SE and the 42mm Series 3 Watch with GPS.
You know what they say about old men and their toys!
Seriously, any tools that keep me on track are not to be sneezed at!
Sorry! What was the question again? 😀
