I had been using gps4cam to track and automatically add geolocation data to my photos, but the app is not compatible with the latest iOS on my iPhone. I have tried contacting the developer to ask about potential updates but get no reply.
Any recommendations for simple, reliable and inexpensive options? (No need to recommend a new camera with built-in gps -- that's a non-starter for me. And no, I am not going back to a previous OS on the phone.)

Simplest has to be an old android phone, a garmin etrix does it but you need a data lead and probably a usb serial port. There are bluetooth gps devices but you still need something to log with. The android option is least pain and it doesn't need to be an expensive phone to create the gpx log file. You don't need a phone with a sim card for this to work.

Yes, the track logging and then decoding the gpx file and automatically adding it to the EXIF in one step are the challenge. See updated query.
gps4cam generated the gps information as a QR code on my phone that I photographed with the camera and put into the folder of images. The companion program on the desktop detected the QR image automatically and then updated the EXIF of the appropriate images via the timestamp matching.

did find this comment on your app
This app is great when it works. I have used it for the past 2-3 years and never had a problem. Unfortunately, as others have reported, the app. is now broken on iOS 10.3.2 (freezes after a new trip is launched).
Thanks to reviewer Ghernes1 for pointing out that the freeze can be avoided if the trip's name is kept to the default value. Then all works fine.
So, minus 1 star for the bug, and minus another one for no update, no matter how minor, in 2 years.
will that work around help?
It is available for android too, seems to be the same story for updates...

Thanks for the suggestion but the problem is the OS incompatibility. When I try to launch the app the phone recognizes the problem immediately and does not launch the app. I need an alternative app and was hoping to get recommendations. It worked very well for me for several years.

I think that might be overstated. Some may have it, and from what I have heard it really drains the battery. gps4cam ran a full day on my iPhone with no problem. It worked anywhere in the world without requiring phone carrier service.

It works fine on my Google Pixel XL - apps not working with new IOS updates was the primary reason for me to abandon the iPhone and get a better phone that didn't have these problems.

Thanks for the thoughts, but I am too entrenched in Apple to switch. For me the benefits of simple interoperability outweigh the nuisances and limitations some folks ascribe to Apple products and their software.

OK, I found Geotag Photos Pro 2 on the web. Has anyone used this? Does it work on iPhone (5S; iOS 11.2.6)? It appears to work similarly to gps4cam except that gpx files are uploaded to a cloud server rather than exporting as a QR code on the phone, meaning it can't be used without wifi or cellular service.
For severeal I've been using Geotag Photos Pro for Ios. I think there is also a free version. Works great when importing to LR.

In 4 years I have never received a reply from this "developer".

I cannot get the off-line app to install on my Mac Pro.
