Have used fuji waterproof P&S (not good). Olympus tough 8yr old (not good). GoPro hero3 black (useable video - photography - not good), Gopro Hero 6 (screen shots - marginal).

Tried out latest Olympus Tough - not too bad. Sony RX100v (with waterproof case is $1200 - too much).

Went with Gopro6 per sons request. Phenomenal video and screen grabs from video is ok for web.

Net: if you are used to DSLR quality, anything else will dissappoint. (Tough and Sony werent bad).

Thanks for all this wonderful advice...good to know!!

In past while kayaking or rafting on rivers and ocean (both calm), I used a dry bag to protect my gear. After you get used to the water and your capability on the water, you may want to keep the camera out.

I was wondering about a dry bag, and checking into it. I appreciate this advice!! Thanks, Marsha

Here are some samples from our Carribbean Cruise. (Jamaica Blue Hole and Grand Cayman Stingray sandbar by jetski)
1st is Fuji Finepix XP90 (auto - picture not a video grab - still crappy)
2nd is screengrab from Hero 3 Black (1080p @30fps) - edited in LR to add some saturation
3rd is screengrab from Hero 6 Black (1080p @30fps ...I think but not sure ) - straight grab - no edits
4th is from my 5Dmkiv with 70-200 2.8L IS (200mm @2.8 1/2000 100iso)
...yep, the DLSR wins :-)

I love being able to take screen grabs from video. Just turn on the video and enjoy the action....but it's hard to give up the DSLR goodness.

If you feel confident Kayaking and the water is calm...hmmmm.....let us know what you decide and how it works out...

My DW gave me an Olympus TG-5. I was not sure why, so I asked. She said that she noticed there were times I left my "good" cameras behind. She suggested I worry about them too much. What do you do when you think of yourself as a serious photographer and your DW gives you a "toy".

You pretty much can't hurt a TG-5. It is made so you can beat the crap out of it, drown it, freeze it, drop it, etc. It is loaded with fun features. It has focus stacking, focus bracketing, HDR, macro/microscope mode, RAW, RAW+JPEG, a compass, a GPS, a flashlight and it fits in my pocket.

The automatic mode is exceptional. For an "adventure trip" you could one had shoot and come home with a lot of good images.

To do all this the sensor has to be small, so the low light stuff will be "artistically" grainy.

I continue to be shocked at how good the little thing does. If you want to pixel peep, I can post some images.

"I love being able to take screen grabs from video."

When shooting 4K, the screen grabs can be impressive. The Olympus TG-5 shoots 4K!

Here is a grab from 3849x2160 30 (actually "2K" or "UHD " but that is what you normally get unless you intentially up it to true 4K)
Its good but I would not say "impressive". Perhaps a true 4K would even be better.
But it is pretty useable for web and media....I wouldnt print it though...

....and I was going to buy the TG-5 instead of the GoPro6 but my son talked me out of it !! The TG-5 was really good (in the store - brough my own memory card and took it for a spin there - reviewed the results at home)

To the OP, the TG-5 was the best "value" of everything I researched. The SOny was better but with waterproofing was more than 2x the cost.

Well...not bad. I could be happy with that for kayaking. What do you think of the zoom? 4x?

THere are lenses you can add!
My 2c would not be carried away with accessorizing this thing....its still an P&S.
Grab it, point it, shoot, keep paddling.

I have seen images of focus stacking etc and it does a really good job but if you are going to do that, use your DSLR on a tripod and do it in LR.

Leave the fancy stuff for you high end equipment. The Tough will allow you to get decent pics and enjoy your kayaking (and video if you want also)
Dont recommend the screen grabs....even at 4K. The pics will from the Tough will still be better.
at 12mp, the sensor does a good job in low light too.....

My TG1 and Fuji Finepix photos were awful but the TG-5 is pretty reasonable.
...if I had to do it over again, I would have got the TG-5 and not the Gopro6.

I was wondering about the "only" 12mp sensor. However, your photo looks pretty good.

I kayak with my Canon 5Div and my 100-400 lens - I stay in calm waters and do my best at staying away from things like jet skis and the like. I take my backpack and put it between my legs, have my camera resting on it while paddling, and it is easy to grab and shoot with. I do have a pretty stable sit-in kayak with a multi-chine hull meant for fishing and haven't had a problem yet (knocking on wood). Like stated earlier, the time to be most careful is getting in and out of the boat.
Enjoy your time on the water with your camera!

Lol...now I'm really wanting to do this! I think I'll get my feet wet (no pun intended) first and then decide on which direction I'm going with this dilemma! Thanks!
