I mainly do Wildlife and Bird photography. I will be doing some traveling this year and want to purchase a wide angle lens for the scenic vistas I am likely to encounter.

I shoot with the Nikon D500 and D850. Currently my widest lens is the Nikon 24-85mm 1:3.5-4.5 G ED. Not opposed to a third party although all my other lenses are Nikon.

Thanks in advance.

NIKON 10-20, Tamron 10-24, or Tokina 11-20 for your D500. Nikon 14-24mm F2.8 or Tamron 15-30mm F2.8 VC for your D850.

Thank you. I'll have a look at those options. Was hoping for one lens that would work with either camera!

Any lens for the D850 will also work perfect on the D500. But because they are full frame lenses they won't give you as much width on the crop sensor D500.

Yes, that I know. So I assume the ones you recommended for the D500 are DX lenses. I haven't had a chance to look them up yet.

Thanks MT Shooter. I'll do my homework!

Beyond 15 feet set to infinite and choose aperature. Almost as good as fully auto.

Since your D850 is a full frame camera with 45.7 megapixels vs 20.9 megapixels on the crop sensor D500. I suppose it would be best, to get the widest lens you can get with a full frame format. Whether, it be a zoom or prime. And use the camera that has the best resolution. Your D850.

Sigma has a 10-20mm lens that is made for several mounts. The word amongst Pentax users is that on FF cameras it vignettes below 15mm, but works fine on FF cameras at 15mm or higher. I'm guessing it work the same on Nikon cameras.

I have too wides, 14-24 and the 16-35. And I will be honest with you, my favorite is the 16-35 Nikon F4. It is my go to lens for landscapes. That said the new Nikon 20 mm f1.8 is also very, very, very, nice. But I like the ability to get the right angle and then zoom to my final image.

You may also want to look at the Nikon 16-35 f4.0 WA zoom? It's a good lens with good glass.

Some thoughts on the subject. The Nikon web site shows that most if not all FX lenses will work on a DX. The downside is good glass is expensive. There are two wide angle zooms for dx cameras: 10-24mm f/3.5 at $899.95 and the 10-20mm with VR at $309.95. The filter on the f/3,5 lens is 77mm and the f4.5 lens has a 72 mm filter. The f3.5 lens weight is 16.2 oz and the f/4.5 lens weight is 8.2 oz. The 10 mm angle of view is 109 degrees on the DX and the $1899.95 FX 14-24 f/2.8 has a 114 degree angle of view on a FX camera and 90 degrees on the DX.
The cheapest FX zooms start $749.95 for a 18-35 mm. Also note some lenses at AF-P and others AF-S.
I suggest that you read the reviews and look on twitter for photos shot with the camera and lens.

If you use a tripod you could just shoot vertical or even horizontal panos with your existing lens and merge them together. Just another option...but you can get higher resolution that way too.

Best,
Todd Ferguson

It all depends on how wide you want to go and with which camera you will use the lens. I am sure you know that a FX wide angle will not do as well with your DX body.
I use a Nikon 12-24 f4 with both types of cameras. When I use it with my FX body it allows me to shoot from around 16mm up to 24mm without vignetting.
