Kind of a silly question, but I figured I'd ask anyway

I'm taking my wife to the big flower show in Philadelphia and I'm trying to decide on which camera to bring. Usually I take one of my Canon DSLR'S with my EF 28-300L mounted. This year, for a few reasons, I've decided not to. My wife was recently the victim of someone who was in a big hurry and apparently is color blind or wasn't paying attention to the traffic lights and on coming traffic. Long story short, my wife will be in a wheel chair and I don't feel like carrying the big Canon lens on my shoulder while pushing a wheel chair.
I'm quite fond of the coverage and versatility of the 28-300 so instead of the Canon white elephant I'm going to take my smaller lighter Nikkor 28-300. Problem is I need to decide on which camera to bring. Which body will give me better results with the indoor lighting in the Pennsylvania convention center, my D7200 or my D500? I don't plan on using a flash but I will have an SB-400 in my pocket if needed.

So sorry to hear of your wife's misfortune! A thought that came to me as I read your post was that perhaps the wife might feel a bit more involved if she held your camera while you push the chair. Just a thought. Do have a fun time at the show!! Enjoy.

The D500 might be slightly better in low light, but the D7200 is lighter and quite competent. I would elect for the D7200 since weight is the deciding issue for this trip. Also, is there a bag or a way to mount one between the handles of the wheel chair?

If I was looking for light I'd take my D7200. No need for speed. It also gives you a built in flash, while not great may come in handy.

I don't think you'll need a telephoto lens in the convention center. An equivalent of 35mm or 50mm would probably be more helpful.

My wife has recently had to start using a wheelchair to get around. I'll push and in return she insists on holding my camera.

On the rare occasions when I have to use my walker, I use a strap that extends between the hand rails and let's the bag ride low in front of me; I do tie it to the brace bar so it doesn't swing too much. I see no reason why this cannot be adapted for the wheelchair handles. Thinking outside the box, you might consider renting her an electric wheelchair for a week (she'll need a few days to practice), giving both of you added independence.

She will be using a Canon SL1 with an EFS 18-135 lens and a hello kitty strap.

Many people seem to feel that way, but the only advantage the D500 has is in fast focusing and bursts .... tests show that the D7200 actually does marginally better in all sensor tests I'm aware of

Actually the 28-300 is ideal for the flower show. I've been going to the show for a long time and I've found the 28-300 works very well. One advantage is, when you can't get physically as close as you'd like, just zoom on in and forget about not being able to get close.

Since speed is not a factor here, the D500 will be staying home. Hopefully I will get a few good photos at the flower show.

D500 should be the better bet. But as you have both, why not set up a bunch (as in a small bouquet, not masses) of flowers under similar lighting at home and do a comparison?
