Would like to get a 50mm prime lens. Can anyone suggest a lens that performs well but doesn’t cost more than my camera did?

I believe that Nikon has a nifty fifty like Canon does. You can not go wrong with that lens if it as good as Canon is.

AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 D. Very good lens, will work on film Nikons as a standard "nifty fifty" and should be fine on your D3300 Crop Sensor camera as a "short" telephoto or portait lens.

Our OP will probably be rather unhappy to learn this lens won't auto focus on their D3300 ....

A better choice would be Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.8 G

Really. I use it now on my D7100 but I originally used it on my D5000 which does not have a focus motor.

You can use the AF lenses as a manual focus lens on D5xxx and D7xxx series cameras, but for auto focus you will need AF-S lenses.

Edit: Correction: The D7xxx series has an in camera auto focus motor and AF lenses will Auto focus on those cameras. It is the D3xxx and D5xxx series cameras do not have in camera focus motors and AF lenses can only be used as manual focus lenses.

Your right,, the D 3300 has no AF motor and it will have to be focused manual.
I have both the 50mm F 1.8 d and the 50mm F 1.8 G,,, saw a test on youtube,
The 50mm F 1.8 G was a little better than the 50mm F 1.4 G lens...
I like my G lens better the D lens.. Both are full frame lens....
Look for a 50mm f 1.8 DX lens..

Unfortunately, Mac's comment is in error ... maybe a typo. Page 89 of the D3300 User's Manual clearly states the compatibility for AutoFocus of Nikon's alphabet soup of legacy lenses.

You are are correct, my post was in error when I stated that AF lenses would only manual focus on the D7xxx series cameras. The D7xxx series have an in camera auto focus motor. It is the D3xxx and D5xxx series cameras that need AF-S lenses to auto focus.

In the chart you posted it clearly states that AF-S, AF-P, and AF-l are the only lenses that will auto focus on the D3300 and that AF lenses will not.

I have the 50 mm f1.8 it is a wonderful lens, so far. Just be careful about the dog at 1
8. I never had the "problem" with my film cameras. I think it is just the way you focus in the digital era.

You’re not going to find a Nikon 50mm DX lens.
Nikon doesn’t make one, probably because there are already several FF models already available that will work.
I read it’s not a popular enough focal length for a DX camera to justify making one.

An inexpensive 50mm FF option made by Yongnou HERE.

The Nikon 500 mm f1.8 isn't a Dx, it is designed for full sensor, but does have a built in motor, and costs under $200. I got it from Beach with a US warrantee, it came with 2 lens shades, a cleaning cloth, a case and a bunch of other throw away stuff.

If you want to shoot at 50mm you need a 35mm lens on a crop body.
