the first is more pleasant , the back ground is more in focus , the apple and the bottle , almost like using a different f stop .

IMHO: there seems to be a couple of problems in the comparison of the two photographs. First is the lighting is duller in the top photograph but the sharpness is on the apple and paper. Appears that if the focal point on both were the same and the lighting were the same it would be a truer comparison.

I suspect that could have been the point. A picture of an apple and and orange with a Nikon and a Canon. A pun.
