Whooping Cranes at Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife, Indiana.
Nice catch ! .......I guess they forgot to go south for the Winter ?
Wow! You are incredibly lucky to spot these. There are fewer than 500 of these birds in the wild. Great catch.
I want to go back to Rockport, TX at some point to see them but both Port Aransas and Rockport are still in recovery mode from Harvey. This would be the time to see the Whoopers, though. I did get some pics a few years ago.
I've seen them there a few times, never more than 3 or 4 at once. One of the birders that hangs out there told me that there is one of them that migrates with the Sandhills. We're seeing (and hearing) more and more pass overhead heading north., Spring is close!
I was at Goose Pond yesterday with the Roberts Camera group(3), but did not get photos this clear. The crane on the left does not appear to have a leg band. As I understand, that would indicate a bird hatched in the wild by captive raised parents. Nice capture.
The last couple of years, global warming, they have had a handful of Whooping Cranes hang around all most all winter. I think they are some younger ones. The unbanded bird in the picture was born in the wild in 2015. Goose Pond is a great birding area, almost 10 thousand acres turned back into wetlands. Huge flocks of Sandhill cranes and snow geese.
