Newborn Fawn

We have a doorway we rarely use. The UPS guy mistakenly left a package there and we went out to get it, finding this little one curled up against the wall. We're told that its normal for deer to give birth and leave the fawn alone. The mother wouldn't be far away. In a day, the fawn was no longer there. I've nicknamed him Geronimo, and we think we see him running around the neighborhood. We'd like to believe he survived...

The fawn is born with no body order. Until it is larger and strong enough to run from predators mom nurses the baby, tucks it away and leaves. That way her body odor will not attract predators too close to the fawn. As a wildlife rehaber, I have to deal with kidnaped fawns every year. People simply refuse to believe that they are not abandoned. You did exactly the right thing.

Great shot, we have deer all around where I live in WV but have never seen one left this close to a home. The mother must know it is quite and safe there!

I saw some episodes of Bandit Patrol on NatGeo, about wildlife rehabers in KY. In one the primary rehaber was rehabing a young fawn. Eventually it was able to join all the other fawns she was taking care of in her barn. You should have seen how many "abandoned" fawn had been turned into her. They filled up a horse stall.
