Are the 2 piece mini SD cards recommended? I am wondering if the mini SD part will possibly come out in my camera?

It's called micro SD card. You need to push it inside an adapter, before you insert it in your camera. It should work as a normal SD card.

The adapter for the mini SD card is the size of a full size SD card. I have two 128 gb mini SD cards in my D7200. They work flawlessly.

Many people advise against using micro SD cards. There is no evidence that they are substandard or inferior to standard size cards.

Standard size SD cards use nine contacts while micro cards use eight. That is not a problem as the extra contact is reserved for future use.

Once inserted, it is wise to leave the card in and d/l using the USB cable. Removing and inserting cards will wear the contacts and handling may damage them. That isn't to say you should never remove the card, but you should do it as little as possible. Use a SD card wallet to hold extra cards and do not touch the contacts. Only clean the contacts with alcohol swabs, lens cleaning wipes, or a Q-tip soaked in alcohol. Do not use pencil erasers or harsh chemicals. Wipe in one direction with light pressure.

There is no way for the card to come apart in the camera and fall inside. Even if it did you could shake it out. As for whether to remove the card to download or not, there are people who say cameras are no good at sorting files, and that the computer should handle all the card management. Wearing the contacts in a camera until damage is done is rare from my experience. You should then format the card in the camera before shooting.

This may be a dumb question but what is the advantage of using a mini card?
Size?
Cost?
Performance?
Thank you

If you own a smartphone, you most likely have a micro SD card inside it without the adapter. The size is obviously smaller, the cost is similar to the full size SD card, and performance should be the same. If you have any doubts about its performance. I suggest you buy a full size SD card. They are quite inexpensive today.

I have four of the micro SD cards in adapters, never a problem. (They were on sale cheaper than the full size version.)
It's not something you need to worry about.

If you card is in two pieces, you have problems. : )

Insert the little card into the big adapter, and you're good to go. I don't like them at all - just too small.

It would work but I wouldn't use it. I use the micro SD card only in devices that need it.

Once the mini-SD is put together there should never be a reason to take it apart if still using the same device (camera). They work fine and I never had a problem with them operating properly. I purchased them just to try them out and save a few $$$$$. Camera can't tell the difference between a standard or mini SD card.

The mini SD has been fine for me IF you choose a quality brand with performance speed. I use San Disk Extreme Pro 95 mb. It's worth the extra $'s for dependability and the faster mb is better for video.
Keep away from Promaster, Ativa, and other off brands; they often fail.

They work well but I prefer the standard size as cards because my aging, less nimble hands keep dropping them and they are not easy for me to pick up and maneuver.

It may or may NOT be called microSD as microSD and miniSD are two different form factors. Both have adapters for standard (ful size) SD slots. microSD and standard SD cards are the most common, but there are also MiniSD cards.

As to the question of using "sub sized" SD cards in their adapters: I never had any issues using them.

Performance is based on the class rating not the physical size of the card. Small physical size is useful in phones, However some compact P&S cameras use microSD without adapters (I have a Samsung P&S that does). No performance issues with it. I have recorded HD video with it.
