Interesting you would ask about that. I have wondered the same thing. I was born in KY, and although I have traveled throughout the US I have not seen fences built the exact same way. Similar, yes, but not the same. But we recently went to Scotland and there, lo and behold, were KY fences. Must have been a lot of Kentuckians moving to Scotland and taking their fence building skills with them. Just kidding.

Rural New England, Rhode Island, Connecticut---a few in Pennsylvania and New York state. WE have some, and know someone who is a master at building such walls!

My husband's grandfather built a stone fence around his homestead in South Dakota. The farm is located in a glacial deposit area and the land is covered with rocks. It is hard to dig a fence post hole. Part of the fence still exists, but his family did sell a section of the fence to be used as rip rap along the shore of a nearby river to prevent the road next to the river from being washed away during flooding. It is hard to believe the effort that went into building those fences. Doubt if anyone would do it today.

There are lots of rock fences in the Gallatin, TN area. Also when at a park in KY on Kentucky River, there was a company repairing the rock fence there and that company specialized in repairing rock fences.

This wall type is common in Nova Scotia. Dalhousie University (1818) in Halifax is surrounded by such walls

I have seen them in Ireland as well. Many Irish involved in the horse trade immigrated to the U.S. in the early 1800s and settled in Kentucky. Most likely, they brought the wall building technique with them.

I live in Niagara County. My property backs up to the Niagara escarpment. That old, lovely stone fence goes across our back poperty lot. You can also see these magnificent stone fences going up to Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario, Canada.

Robert Frost wrote: "Good fences make good neighbors". This is often illustrated with a New England style stone fence or wall.

These stacked stone fences or stone walls are very common in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. I have never seen fences like these anywhere else. I have lived or traveled all over the US and in Asia and Europe. Have any of you UHHers seen similar fences outside this region? I am just curious, because I have only seen these in this area. The stones are stacked, with no mortar holding them together. That is fairly obvious in the shot of the damaged area of the fence. If you have seen this style of fences outside this region, please reply with where you have seen them.

They are very commonplace in the North Yorkshire region of England (UK) and Scotland (UK). They are called Dry Stone Walls due to the absence of mortar. Construction of these is a dying skill with local interest groups trying to keep it going, especially at country fairs.

Being from Vermont and moving to Kentucky, I have found this discussion fascinating. A neighbor just had 40' of wall constructed as a landscaping feature and I believe that I paid less for my first house. Not mentioned are the walls that meander through forests that at one time were fields. This may not be unique to New England, but I have not seen it elsewhere.

These fences are somewhat similar to those in The Azores, Portugal, Ireland, Scotland and other places around the world.

Last year my wife and I toured White Flower Farm Nursery in Litchfield, Ct. where the nursery is fronted with stacked stone. Sorry, no pictures available.
