We see lots of discussions here that could be avoided: dpi and pixels, focal length and depth of field, full frame vs cropped, whether a lens changes focal length when it's put on a different camera, etc. It's not that the topics are worthless, but different people have different ideas about how to discuss those topics. It's like some members are waiting to pounce if someone uses a term they don't like.

Well said Jerry, beware the trolls...

But cameras are so much more complicated than cars.

A lot of our "problems" are not mechanical, but not knowing how to perform certain procedures. Cameras themselves work pretty well. It's the operators who often have trouble.

And cars are much more difficult to drive than using a camera.

You are exactly correct. Because the technical part is easy to master. To take a photo that others keep wanting to look at is extremely hard for most people. You either born with the eye or not. Most of us will never have the skills to take award winners just like most of us will never play in the nfl, nba, nhl, etc...

The one thing I have noticed about most professional athletes is that they can't string two coherent sentences together. I think I can do that so I am not eligible to be a professional athlete.

In both cameras and automobiles the technology is too much for many people to master. Think, for example, of how few people have mastered that most complex technology called the "Turn Signal".

I got to thinking. We spend a lot of time and effort in dealing with the technical side of photography, the mechanics. If we put that much effort into driving a car, we'd still be at the end of the driveway at the end of the day.

I park on the street. Sometimes I capture images on the street.

I'm not at the end of the driveway, so am I weird?

It is technologically impossible to change a flat tire now. We have to wait several hours for a tire technologist to arrive in his tow truck.

I remember having to drive a car with a double clutch and a stick. Many current "auto borrowers" can't get a car off the proverbial drive with a stick.

In the "olden golden days of yore", one just purchased a camera, read the two page insert, and went out to practice, practice and practice. Now it is to spend a large amount of time to read the many pages of "How to turn the camera On" section of the 600 page plus PDF manual. TIP: Make certain the right battery is fully charged BEFORE clicking operations ON button. And, for the true Tyros, with the battery fully inserted and locked in correct bay.

I'm wondering what most of us will be doing for a living when most tasks are done by Computers and Robots. Few people will have jobs! Outside of Medicine, Science and Engineering Research, and Law, the world will need a very small workforce. Even now computers design computers. Soon most of us will have all the time we want to pursue hobbies and the arts. But it will take a sea change to rid ourselves of Capitalism.

It is technologically impossible to change a flat ... (show quote)

For only one film camera did I ever have to look at the instructions.

Sad to say, Politics will always be with us.

The professions that you cite as 'outside of' are already being affected by deep learning and artificial intelligence.

The societal impact will be signigicant, and not necessarily pleasant.

People who want to take photographs learn about the tools, experiment and push the limits of of the available tools. Those that want to take pictures, just point, shoot and except the results they get.
