Hello, I'm relatively new to this forum and have enjoyed your banter with one another as well as appreciated the skill level that's out there. I do shoot some digital (Canon 5D MIII). I still prefer to shoot film, predominantly B&W and enjoy working in my darkroom. I was wondering whether there are others on this site that frequently shoot film?

Although I'm no longer one of them, there are quite a few here who regularly use film. Some of them are very advanced photographers with a lifetime of experience using multiple formats. I hope they respond.

You might be surprised how many still shoot film. I shoot 35mm, Medium Format and 4X5.

More interestingly, I don't sell photography, but have been selling film gear on ebay nearly 20 years now. Have attempted to sell digital, but only lose money on the rapid model changes and heavily declining prices for all digital gear. That includes all the computer gear, printers and evolution there. Next time somebody intimates that digital is "FREE", just slap the liar.

Film market is up. It will likely be a long running niche market like vinyl and similar. More film is coming on board around the world, and the lenses sell well to the legacy digital crowd who don't want to pay for digital glass and don't mind manual focus. There are still a ton of excellent high end film cameras and lenses out there in the used market.

Welcome aboard. Processing is available all across the country on line, and many are DIYing film processing, considering all the daylight gear available. No dark rooms necessary (but nice) as it can be done with changing bags, or a light tight closet or bathroom.

By the way, you do know that in event of the impending nuclear disasters, digital will disappear with all the electronic gizmos we have made ourselves dependent on. It's called EMP for ElectroMagnetic Pulse, from Nuclear Blasts, courtesy of Kim Jong, Pakistan, Iran, Isreal, Your own Donald Trump and his colluders... Russia, China. ETC.

Film will win that one.

If I were still using film, I'd be souping my own, loading tanks in a dark basement bathroom. I'd scan the negs to 48-bit files (or rephotograph them in raw) and print digitally after processing TIFFs (raws) in Lightroom.

Welcome! Although I have a 5D3 like you, I still shoot both 35mm (Canon EOS-1N) and MF (RB67 ProS) film. I have a darkroom equipped for both B&W and color, but mostly shoot, process and print B&W. There are still some great bargains in film bodies and lenses out there, excellent availability of materials, and I urge you to continue.

Thanks for the response. Generally, I shoot 4X5 and I do soup my own negs. I have been scanning negs recently - a humbling experience to scan negs you never printed; the reason I never printed them becomes evident post scan. I have been scanning (Epson V750 Pro) at 800 dpi resolution at 24 bits. Scanning settings seem to not have much influence when scans are opened in PS. They all open as 16 bit scans; I have no idea why.

A couple of years ago, well four years ago, I started doing Bromoil printing. I generally create scans or use original digital images, post process in PS and print as digital negs for contact printing. I would love to get into other alternative printing techniques, i.e. Pd/Pt, carbon black cyanotype as so forth. All of these require a UV box, and I don't currently have one; nor do I have cash I willing to put out to buy a new one. If anyone has plans for a DIY box and lighting diagram I would appreciate a heads up.

Thanks for the reply. I do have a 35mm Canon body and have plans to start shooting some 35mm in the near future. My darkroom (just finished building it a week ago - moved to a different house) is also set up for color and B&W; I got a color head because I once printed Cibachrome (don't know what they're calling it now.) A fair amount of my B&W has been printed on FB variable contrast paper so a dichroic head makes filter alterations far easier.

My preferred camera is a Wista 4X5 field camera. Hope we can get some "New Topics" on film started, or maybe it's already on this site. I haven't spent a great deal of time here to date.

Good point about the EMP issue. I am looking for plans to build a UV box for alternative printing processes if you know of one in good condition I'd appreciate a heads up.

Sadly, Cibrchrome materials are no longer available. It was my preferred color print media. If the materials were available, I’d be printing it again - beautiful prints with great archival qualities.

If I knew what your needs are, (the UV box that is) I may be able to help you in the plans department and set you up with working drawings for you to construct one. If you know of a web site that has dimensions, and such, I'll have a look see.

Hi welcome I still shoot film have two nF3 and &n90s. With several lens. Lots of film out there. Use ilford Hp5 portra 400 Fuji pro 400h as well as t max and tri x. Lomography has some decent film also. Like you I shoot some digital. I find the challenge of film still fun. Scan my better shots into computer and post process them. Good shooting and film is not dead far from it.

Film has been around for at least 100 years. Now how long do you think digital will live?
