Good morning!

I have a D7200 with what I believe is the current firmware version (1.02). We just got the Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 10-20mm f/4.5-5.6G VR lens which does not have a switch to turn on/off the VR capabilities of the lens.
On my wife's D3300, there is an "Optical VR" option in the photo SHOOTING MENU, but I can't find anything similar in my D7200 menus.

So two questions for the community:

1. Does this option exist on the D7200 and I'm just looking in the wrong place?

2. If I can't turn off VR, how will this impact my images when I'm shooting on a tripod?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I believe I've seen similar questions answered that: here it is not an issue with the Camera Body, but that Nikon feels there is no need for a VR switch on a Wide Angle zoom lens. I tend to agree. Many prime WA lenses have no VR at all, not really needed at such low magnifications. Also, have you checked your manual? The VR may switch off or on automatically for some lenses. Good luck.

Possibly a firmware update for your camera is or will be available.

Not my words...
Just found this doing an internet search asking your same question that's all...

This is copied word for word from Nikon in reference to AF-P lenses: "The lens will default to VR on when attached to models released prior to the D3400: D3300, D5500, D5300, D5200, D7200, D7100. These cameras will also require a firmware upgrade to access the menu to turn off the VR." You need to update your firmware to 1.02 at

You need to update your D7200 firmware for full AF-P lens functionality.

From Photography Life:

"•Compatible models with limited functions: D5, D810 series, Df, D750, D7200, D7100, D5200, Nikon 1 series with the FT1"

They did not test the D7200, but the D7100 and others in the list above that they did test had no way to turn off VR.

BTW - According to the Nikon site, 1.02 is the latest Firmware.

Sadly, the D7200 allows you to use an AF-P lens, but has not been updated to allow you to turn off VR.

Thanks, Steve. I've enjoyed both of your E-Books. Since you seem to be on top of all of this, any idea if/when Nikon will have a firmware update to include this feature?

And is this even an issue for landscape photos or am I just overthinking this?

Sadly, no clue if Nikon is going to address this or not. At this point, I think that if they were going to do something about it, they probably would have by now.

Nikon seems to think the VR being on all the time isn't a big deal - and I have found VR on modern lenses to be able to "withstand" both higher and lower shutter speeds pretty well. Where I would really worry would be long exposure of several seconds or more. If the lens were to move a VR element during a long, tripod mounted exposure, it would certainly introduce blur to the image. Might be worth a test.

I'm almost embarrassed that I didn't know about AF-P that has been out for 2 years, but I haven't been looking for DX lenses.
Does the P in AF-P mean anything relevant? Closest I can find is stePPer motor.

Found this -

"As AF-P lenses incorporate a stepping motor, the number of compatible cameras is limited. For compatible cameras, a firmware update may be required".

That wasn't what I meant, but while waiting I stumbled upon this: AF-P lenses use a Pulse or stepping motor. So it's P for Pulse.

No that function is not available on the D7200 even with the software update. I have read that it isn't necessary to turn off the VR with the new P lens when on a tripod however that function is available on certain camera models via the menu but the D7200 isn't one of them.

I have the same lens. I checked with Nikon and was told that there would be some movement/blurred image if the camera were mounted firmly on a tripod. And... there is no way to turn off VR.

Thanks, Tom. I didn't know I could update my firmware to turn off VR on my Nikon 10-20. I think I still have the reply from Nikon and I don't recall their offering that option. Maybe I missed something.
