Life on the street. Well taken, I don't think you could get more 'street' than this. Technically, I think you have tried to get a bit of soft focus back by over sharpening but it doesn't detract too much. I do like the set though.

Is this really "life on the street"? Or just a person located on a sidewalk? Neither makes it Street Photography though.

I will grant we can call each at least weakly Street Photography. All of them are cropped far too close and fail to show enough of the human condition as a relationship between the various physical objects.

Sure, because they are nice people pictures! What's not to like?

But how do they rate as Street Photography, as opposed to just nice pictures of a street scene. Two very different genres.

I don't in any way feel that I am a purist when it comes to any genre of.photography. I saw it, liked it and that was that. I am not well enough versed to know what street photography should be. I have looked at a lot of it on the net but to judge what is or isn't I suspect lies only in the eye of the beholder.

That is certainly reasonable. I like all three images. I just wish the potential for Street Photography could have been better taken advantage of.

I like it,.. a lot. Very good example of street photography. To me, it looks like college student taking a quick nap between classes and he's off to class in #3. You don't often see someone using a curbside to take a nap. It isn't until #3, that the general surrounding is revealed. IMHO, combining #1 with the background of #3 would have make a stronger impact. I might have PP differently, lightening the subject and darkening the background to isolate the viewers attention onto the kid. It's still nice work.

I do have to respectfully disagree with Apaflo. I think this meets all the criteria of street photography including the definition for this section. You can see similar type images from the greats of the past and highly regarded street photographer of today. While I can agree that this isn't of the same caliber as say Henri Cartier-Bresson, I think this is still a very good example of the street photography genre. Just my opinion.

Hi Robert, Everybody that has commented here has agreed that they like your set of images. The sequence tells a story, a young boy runs out of energy, lies on the sidewalk to rest, perhaps to sleep a while, then he gets up and then goes on his way. I have a very simple test. I ask myself “What is the photograph(s) about”. If I can answer that I am good to go further. However, even though everybody likes your photos, not everybody thinks they are street photography and I am going to try to explain why those that hold that opinion, think the way they do.

I am going to try to explain it using images that I have previously posted here so as not to involve anyone else. I am not saying they are great photographs or that I am the big “I am”. If others disagree with my explanation then it is all on me and my back is broad enough to take the flack. Some talk about the 'human condition', it sounds good but what does it actually mean. In very simple terms it is a relationship. They are saying that there must be some sort of relationship, however intangible, between the main subject and something else. It doesn't matter what that something else is and sometimes it is not even necessary for that something else to be in shot, just so long as there is an overall balance between the main subject and some secondary object. If that secondary object can be related back to another human then that makes the relationship and the photograph stronger but a direct human is not always necessary.

Have a look at this image.

This is an easy one. It is something nearly all of us have experienced. Something has gone missing and one of them is on the receiving end of the other ones ire. The relationship is between two people and it is balanced.

This second one is a busy photo but the main relationship is between the little girl and the pet bird, again balanced.

http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-484576-1.html

This one is a little bit more intangible but the relationship is between the concentrating man and what he is writing. Balanced Again.

http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-477811-1.html

This one is a bit more obscure but the relationship and balance here goes around the generational difference demonstrated by the style of dress between the two older women walking and the two younger women lying down.

Okay, now you have the idea, go back to the three photos you have posted and ask “What is the relationship between the main subject and something else, even if it not in frame”. There isn't one and that is why some people are saying it is not 'Street.' That looks like a vinyl LP the boy is holding, maybe it is just a book or pamphlet. If he had been looking at it in the second shot, that would work, just like my guy that was on the phone and writing something down.

Have a read of the comments that went around this one, you might find it interesting.

Lastly, I hope you realize this comment was meant as an explanation as I see it and nothing detrimental against you.
