[quote=mafadecay]Just noticed the heading "Dog Day Afternoon" and I have no idea in any shape or form what this means. I was wondering if it is a famous American saying. I have completely drawn a blank. I googled it and the only thing really returning any hits is a 1975 Al Pacino movie about a bank robbery.

The is an American saying. A dog day afternoon is basically a day when you don't feel like doing anything but lie around. In the movie, it refers to the fact that nothing goes right and you'd be better off to do nothing.

comes from the dog days of summer with refference to the "DOG" star Serius, which is high in the sky in the middle of Summer most notably August. Serius is actually two stars A and B and is in the orion constellation. Coinsidently the DOGon people of Mali get their name from these stars and beleive we were visited by beings fron Serius.
Anyway there you go

The way things are going here you sure they didn't visit us? I have been told that this country is going to the dogs.

Dog Days are August Heat with 98% humidity, in a field of corn that is 8' tall, cutting weeds with a corn knife. Dog Days are beginning of two a day football practice in pads while being terribly out of shape, in August Heat with 98% humidity. Dog days are when the fish just won't bite on a thing. But then, Dog Days are apple pie, home made ice cream, ripe home grown tomatos, iced tea, fried chicken, new potato salad and a picknick in the park-and the kids back in school. Saved the best for last.

2 pictures, initially, really stand out for me. These pictures are so close to making you good money.

1) Entitled Summer afternoon. Almost a perfect stock image but the crop is slightly off. To be perfect it needs a little more head room and a little bit more beach below the feet.

2) Tank the Staff or pitbull or what ever delicious breed he is. The lighting is spot on & composition is 99.9% there. All this image is missing is the bottom right paw is slightly cropped and when zoomed at 100% the DOF is too shallow at F/2.8 for all the image to be in sharp focus.

Please note this is my view for a stock type image and not my vote for the competition.

There are too many to choose!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just curious: what do the numbers with the images mean?
If the one in brackets represents the number of votes for that image, what does the number before the brackets mean?

The short answer is:
The X.XX numbers are the points
The (XX) numbers are the number of votes

The long answer from ADMIN is below:

You can vote as many times as you like, but only have one voting point.
If you vote for multiple photos, your voting point gets divided across them all.

For example:

You see a photo you like and you vote for it. That photo now has a score of +1 point from you.
Later on, you see another photo you like and you decide to vote for it too. At this time, each of the two photos gets a score of +0.5 from you.
If you vote for yet another photo, then the three of them will get +0.33 points each from you.
And so on. The number of votes is only limited by the number of photos in the contest.

The rating of a photo is calculated as a sum of all points received from all users.

You can also revoke your vote for any photo at any time. Doing so recalculates your vote share.

So if we continue with the example above (you voted for three photos) and you decide to revoke your vote for one of the photos, then the two remaining photos would get +0.5 points from you added to their scores.

Such system allows you to "change your mind" in case some new photos get uploaded for the contest and you decide not to spread your voting power too thin. If the contest's settings allow it you can begin voting right away while keeping track of new photos added to the contest.

On the ratings page, each photo's rating is shown as two numbers like "4.5 (7)" -- which means the photo in question has a total of 4.5 points based on votes of 7 users.

To sum it up, you can vote for any many photos as you like. But your voting power gets spread across all photos for which you vote. So each photo gets a smaller bump in the score. On the other hand, more of the photos you like get a chance to be at the top of the contest.

That makes sense, thank you so much!
And I'm tickled pink that at least one user liked my picture enough to vote for it ;-))
First time I ever participated in a competition!
